Mikaela Shiffrin clinched her sixth overall World Cup title on Wednesday, March 25, tying Annemarie Moser-Pröll for most by a female Alpine skier. Next up: Marchel Hirscher's record of eight overall titles.

"What? Are you sure?" Shiffrin said when the title was confirmed, sinking to her knees in the finish area with fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and U.S. teammate Paula Moltzan looking on.

Shiffrin finished 87 points ahead of Germany's Emma Aicher. That's the tightest margin, by far, of her six overall titles.

"I have to say to Emma, her skiing has been just outstanding. And today, it was just so cool to watch her. Especially on the first run," Shiffrin said.

"I'm really, really grateful to be in this position now. It's really a big emotion," she added. "But I'm also grateful for the fight."

USA's Mikaela Shiffrinwon gold in the slalom Wednesday, Feb. 18, her first medal since winning a silver in the combined at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. It snapped an 0-for-8 streak at the Winter Games, which included DNFs in three events four years ago.

The overall title caps a spectacular season for Shiffrin. Shewon her third Olympic gold medalat the Milano Cortina Olympics last month, and also set asingle-season record for most wins in a single disciplinewith victories in nine of the 10 slalom races.

It also adds to her already lengthy list of accomplishments. Shiffrin holds the records for most total World Cup victories of any skier (110); wins in a season (17); and season titles in a single discipline (nine).

"It's quite emotional. This thing sums up a whole season of work and fighting with the whole team," Shiffrin said.

And it comes after two of the most difficult seasons of her career.

Shiffrin missed big chunks of the last two seasons with injuries, including a puncture wound her in her obliques suffered in a crash during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont. Shiffrin was out for a month, and continued to experience PTSD in GS for the rest of the season.
