Texans are buzzing after a mysterious "McConaughey for Governor" stage popped up in Austin — leaving many to wonder if Matthew McConaughey is finallythrowing his cowboy hat into the political ring.
"Is this real life, y'all?" one Texan questioned in a video shared via TikTok on Tuesday, November 11. "Is Matthew McConaughey actually running for governor of Texas?"
The footage in question shows an aerial view of The Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, Texas, where a stage was assembled displaying large campaign-style posters declaring "McConaughey for Governor." The stage is surrounded by Texas flags and patriotic bunting.
"Be a lot cooler if you voted," the apparent campaign slogan read, a play on his iconic line from the filmDazed and Confused.
While Texas fans have been eagerly awaiting the day theDallas Buyers Clubstar announces his bid for governor of the Lone Star State, 2025 is seemingly not that time.
The apparent campaign is likely part of McConaughey andpal Woody Harrelson'supcomingApple TV+ series,Brothers,in which they play fictional versions of themselves.
McConaughey recently opened up about his potential political future,tellingPeoplein September that he won't seriously consider a run until hischildren are "out of the house."
"That would happen if and when it was something that I couldn't not do. It would happen when I would look up and see that I'm pulled into it in a way that, 'Oh, I have to,'" he told the outlet. "For now, I'm very secure with — the original thing I knew I always wanted to be was a dad."
He added, "If I did that now, Iwouldn't be able to be the fatherand spend the time with the family the way that I have so far, and it's something I'mnot ready to sacrifice."
Texans will have to wait until at least 2034, as McConaughey's youngest child, son Livingston, is just 12 years old. He alsoshares son Levi, 17, and daughter Vida, 15, with wife Camila Alves McConaughey.
