Former Ravens QB Cooper Rush to participate in Vikings minicamp tryout

Former Ravens QB Cooper Rush to participate in Vikings minicamp tryout

Rookie minicamps are typically designed to introduce draft picks and undrafted free agents to NFL life, but now and then, they also become an opportunity for veterans searching for another chance. That’s exactly where formerBaltimore Ravensquarterback Cooper Rush currently finds himself.

USA TODAY

According toannouncements from both the Minnesota VikingsandPro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Rush has been invited to participate in theVikings’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. While the setting may seem unusual for a veteran with regular-season starting experience, the move makes plenty of sense for both sides.

Minnesota needs extra arms for practice reps, especially after failing to draft or sign a rookie quarterback following the 2026 NFL Draft. Rush, meanwhile, gets another opportunity to remind teams he can still provide value as an experienced backup.

Cooper Rush brings experience to Vikings minicamp as he seeks his new opportunity

Despite bouncing around in recent years, Rush is far from an unknown commodity. The 32-year-old has appeared in 42 regular-season games during his NFL career while making 16 starts. He compiled a decent and respectable 9-7 record along the way.

Most of that experience came during his lengthy stint with theDallas Cowboys, where he spent seven seasons serving as one of the league’s more dependable reserve quarterbacks.Rush later joined the Ravens, though his stay in Baltimore proved short-lived.

The organization eventually released himafter elevating Tyler Huntley into the primary backup role behind Lamar Jackson. Now, the veteran quarterback finds himself attempting to extend his NFL career yet again.

The Vikings are keeping their options open. They already have four quarterbacks on the roster, so this minicamp invite does not necessarily signal an imminent signing. Still, teams often use these workouts to evaluate veteran depth, leadership presence, and potential emergency options for later in the offseason.

The Vikings also invited veteran wide receiver Trenton Irwin and offensive lineman Brandon Walton to participate, further illustrating that rookie minicamp sometimes serves broader purposes than simply evaluating first-year players.

For Rush, however, this weekend carries extra significance. Opportunities can become increasingly difficult to find as quarterbacks move deeper into their thirties, particularly backups without long-term starting resumes. Still, experienced veterans who understand protections, timing, and how to stabilize a locker room can often linger around the league longer than expected. We'll see if such is true for Rush.

Surfers in war-torn Gaza find rare moments of joy taking to the waves

DEIR AL-BALAH, The Gaza Strip (AP) — Despite the dire humanitarian crisis acrossthe Gaza Strip, where a fragile ceasefire remains in place, a handful of Palestinian surfers arefinding joy— and relief — riding the waves of the territory’s Mediterranean coastal waters.

Israel Palestinians Gaza Surf

Only three or four men still surf due to a shortage of surfboards and the materials needed to fix damaged ones, said Tahseen Abu Assi, a surfer in Gaza City.

Abu Assi carried his surfboard with him through every displacement he endured during the two-year war because, he said, he wouldn't be able to replace it.

“If something happened to it I won’t be able to get another one,” he said, noting that no boards have entered the Palestinian territory since 2007. Surfboards are among sports equipment and other products that are banned by Israel.

On Tuesday, Abu Assi was among three surfers who took to the sea off the Gaza City port, including Khalil Abu Jiab, who road the high waves with his arms raised in joy.

After the war began, the Israeli military heavilyrestricted sea activity in Gaza, with the United Nations reporting that some fishermen were attacked onshore or at sea, including incidents involving fishermen using paddle boats.

Last year, Israel declared Gaza’s waters a “no-go zone,” banning fishing, swimming and sea access, making surfing risky.

Fishing and swimming are prohibited and dangerous in the waters off northern and southern Gaza. It's also risky to enter the waters off central Gaza, where Gaza City is located, due to Israeli patrols.

“There is fear of course, but we can’t leave this sport," Abu Assi said. "During the war, in the middle of the war, in the middle of the bombing and the planes above us, we used to go down and practice this sport.”

Gaza’s waves rarely rise high enough for surfing, so when they do, surfers drop everything to get in the water, he added.

Intense fighting across the enclave eased after ashaky ceasefiretook effect on Oct. 10, butdeadly Israeli strikeshave continued, with both Hamas and Israel accusing each other of violating the truce.

Israel’s war with Hamas broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, after themilitants attacked southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking another 251 hostage. Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has killed 72,628 Palestinians and injured 172,520 others, according to the latest figures by Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Palestinians continue to struggle to secure food, clean water, medical care and shelter after the war caused widespread destruction, dismantled healthcare infrastructure and displaced most of the territory’s residents.

But for the territory's few surfers, there is relief, even if only fleeting, when they take to the waves.

“As soon as the sea gets high, you leave your work and leave your whole life,” Abu Assi said. "Work can be caught up on, as they say. We go practice this sport.”

Bills suddenly have 13 wide receivers, and tough decisions ahead

TheBuffalo Billsdon't have a wide receiver problem anymore. They might have too many.

USA TODAY

After the2026 NFL Draftand a wave ofundrafted free agent signings, the Bills have 13 wide receivers on the roster.

NFL rosters can carry 90 players during the offseason so the depth chart will get whittled down over the summer. Buffalo kept six wide receivers on its initial 53-man roster last season.

Here are the 13 wide receivers currently on the roster:

D.J. Moore:Proven veteran and likely WR1 after arriving viatrade this offseason. He has four 1,000-yard seasons over eight NFL years.

Khalil Shakir:One of Josh Allen’s most trusted targets and a lock for a major role. Shakir has led the Bills in receiving yards in back-to-back seasons, caught 76% of his career targets and ranked among the NFL leaders in yards after catch each of the last two years. Being a No. 2 receiver should be an ideal fit.

Keon Coleman:Young, high-upside receiver the Bills hope takes a jump in Year 3 after totaling 67 receptions, 960 yards and eight touchdowns over his first two seasons. Rookie Skyler Bell could push Coleman for snaps.

Joshua Palmer:Had a disappointing first season in Buffalo with 22 catches for 303 yards. Still searching for his first touchdown with the Bills.

Tyrell Shavers:Probably starts the season on injured reserve after suffering atorn ACL in the playoffs. Was one of the Bills’ better feel-good stories in 2025 after making the 53-man roster and finishing with 15 catches for 245 yards and a touchdown.

Trent Sherfield:Journeyman who has played for five teams in eight NFL seasons, including Buffalo in 2023. His value goes beyond receiving production because of his blocking and special teams ability.

Jalen Virgil:Back for a second stint in Buffalo after spending 2025 on the practice squad. Hasn’t appeared in an NFL regular-season game since 2022.

Stephen Gosnell:Earned a practice squad spot in 2025 after a strong training camp as an undrafted rookie in which he seemed to catch everything thrown his way.

Mecole Hardman Jr.:Had a strange 2025 season. He signed to Buffalo’s practice squad in November, returned a kickoff 61 yards in his Bills debut, later fumbled a punt, injured his calf and landed on injured reserve. Hardman didn’t catch a regular-season pass but did haul in a touchdown in the playoffs against Denver.

Skyler Bell:Rookiefourth-round pickand consensus All-American at UConn who had 101 receptions for 1,278 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2025. One of the more athletic receivers at the NFL Combine and can line up inside or outside.

Ja’Mori Maclin:Undrafted free agent and cousin of former NFL receiver Jeremy Maclin. He played six college seasons between North Texas and Kentucky and finished with 100 catches, 1,891 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Max Tomczak:Undrafted free agent who holds Youngstown State’s career receptions record with 225 catches and ranks second in school history with 3,024 receiving yards.

Gabriel Benyard:Versatile offensive weapon who played running back and receiver at Kennesaw State. He finished his college career with 111 receptions for 1,751 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding 569 rushing yards and three scores.

Nathan MacKinnon stars as Avs grab 2-0 lead over Wild

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 5-2 in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series in Denver on Tuesday night.

Field Level Media

Colorado swept the first two games at home and has won six straight to start the postseason. Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday night in St. Paul, Minn.

Gabriel Landeskog and Martin Necas had a goal and an assist each, Nicolas Roy and Valeri Nichushkin also scored, Brett Kulak had two assists and Scott Wedgewood turned away 29 shots for the Avalanche.

Filip Gustavsson had 18 saves in his first start of this postseason for Minnesota, replacing rookie Jesper Wallstedt, who allowed eight goals on 42 shots in Game 1.

Marcus Johansson and Kirill Kaprizov had goals for the Wild, who were without injured top-line center Joel Eriksson Ek and injured defenseman Jonas Brodin for the second straight game.

After a 15-goal barrage in Game 1, the teams started fast in Game 2. Necas opened the scoring just 2:51 into the game when he got a pass from MacKinnon and lifted a backhander over Gustavsson's left shoulder to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.

The Wild answered off the ensuing faceoff. Mats Zuccarello passed it to Ryan Hartman, and he slid the puck to Kaprizov at the Avalanche blueline. Kaprizov went in alone on Wedgwood and beat him with a wrister six seconds after Necas scored.

Colorado went back in front 15 seconds into its first power play midway through the first period when MacKinnon fed Landeskog in front of the net at 8:24 of the first.

"Five on five we did a lot of good things tonight," Wild coach John Hynes said. "Special teams need to be better. I thought the first power play we had was really good. We did everything but score, and then the other one wasn't what we needed it to be."

"I thought Gustavsson gave us a chance to win," Hynes added. "The difference in the game was the special teams. That's basically what it comes down to."

Roy made it 3-1 just 1:24 into the second period when he got behind the defense and beat Gustavsson with a snap shot.

Minnesota controlled the play for much of the third period and had great chances on a power play but Wedgewood denied a close-in shot at 5:54.

"I thought we stuck to our game plan all night long, penalty kill came up big, Wedgie was awesome for us once again," Landeskog said.

Colorado went on the power play and MacKinnon scored on a one-timer at 13:18 to make it a three-goal cushion.

Johansson's goal at 14:33 gave the Wild life, and Gustavsson came off for an extra skater with 2:20 left. Nichushkin scored into the empty net at 19:55.

"They're probably going to come hard in their building, we know that, so we'll be ready to play," Roy said of Game 3.

What are former Brewers up to in the big leagues?

May 08, 2026
What are former Brewers up to in the big leagues?

As we get into the teeth of the May schedule, take a look at formerMilwaukee Brewerscurrently active on big-league rosters around Major League Baseball.

USA TODAY

Trent Grisham, New York Yankees

After a breakout 2025 season with the Yankees, the 2019 Brewer took a qualifying offer this offseason, and he's struggled with a .680 OPS (on-base plus slugging). He'll be in Milwaukee this weekend. The center fielder has just a .182 batting average and .308 on-base percentage, with five homers after belting 34 last year.

Willy Adames,San Francisco Giants

It's been a struggle for the beloved former Brewer, with a .194 batting average and .565 OPS. He has three homers and has struggled defensively. Former Brewers backup catcher Eric Haase is also with the Giants and has two doubles among his three hits in 10 at-bats.

Freddy Peralta, New York Mets

The former Brewers ace was dealt to New York in the offseason, and the Mets can't complain about the early returns. Peralta has a 3.12 earned run average in eight starts with 43 strikeouts in as many innings.

Adrian Houser, San Francisco Giants

Houser signed in the offseason with San Francisco, but it hasn't gone well, with a 6.19 ERA in seven starts and a WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) in excess of 1.5. He has only 19 strikeouts in 36 innings.

José Quintana, Colorado Rockies

Quintana has fared much better than you might think for the 37-year-old who's agreed to pitch in Coors Field. He has a 3.90 ERA in six starts, with 14 strikeouts in 30 innings. He had a 3.96 ERA for the Brewers last year.

Aaron Civale, Athletics

Civale, traded to the White Sox last year in the deal that netted Andrew Vaughn, also pitched for the Cubs last year before signing with the Athletics. And he's been strong, with a 2.95 ERA in seven starts covering 37 innings.

Jason Junk,Miami Marlins

Briefly a Brewer, Junk has an excellent 2.82 ERA in seven starts, ranking him among the top 25 in baseball among qualified starters. He has a 1.04 WHIP in 38 innings.

Drew Rasmussen, Tampa Bay Rays

Once traded for Adames in 2021, Rasmussen is a steady presence for the Rays, with a 2.95 ERA in seven starts and 37 strikeouts in 37 innings, plus a sterling WHIP of 0.93. Could he be in line for a second all-star appearance?

Colin Rea,Chicago Cubs

In his second year with Chicago, Rea has continued to be solid, with a 4.03 ERA and 4-1 record in eight games (five starts), plus 35 strikeouts in 38 innings.

Caleb Durbin,Boston Red Sox

Durbin's well-documented slow start has gotten a little better, but he's still at a .526 OPS with just one homer and four stolen bases. He does have a 0.6 Wins Above Replacement though, helped by his play as the team's starting third baseman.

Andruw Monasterio, Boston Red Sox

The infielder has played in 19 games with a home run, stolen base and .629 OPS.

Left fielder Isaac Collins of the Kansas City Royals makes a catch during the fourth inning of the game against the Minnesota Twins at Kauffman Stadium on April 02, 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Isaac Collins,Kansas City Royals

The outfielder has turned a corner after a slow start, now up to a .747 OPS with three homers, 12 RBIs and two stolen bases. He was acquired in the offseason in the deal that sent Ángel Zerpa to Milwaukee.

Nick Mears, Kansas City Royals

The reliever, dealt in the offseason in the Zerpa trade, has a 1.98 ERA in 14 innings with 10 strikeouts. Former Brewers minor leaguer Lucas Erceg has a 3.52 ERA as the Royals closer, with a league-leading 10 saves.

Devin Williams, New York Mets

As the Mets have struggled, Williams has been under the microscope, with a 6.17 ERA and five saves in nearly 12 innings. In the small sample, he has a WHIP of 1.8.

Tobias Myers, New York Mets

Traded to New York in the offseason deal for Peralta, he has a 3.57 ERA in 11 games (one start), with a cool 1.06 WHIP.

Tyrone Taylor, New York Mets

The 32-year-old outfielder has played in 29 games but is struggling with a .532 OPS despite two homers and 10 RBIs.

Bryan Hudson, Chicago White Sox

Guess who's back? The lanky left-hander has been superb in the White Sox pen with a 1.06 ERA in 17 innings, 20 strikeouts and eight walks. He hasn't allowed a homer and has one save.

Rhys Hoskins, Cleveland Guardians

After playing for the Brewers the last two years, he has a .719 OPS for the Guardians with six doubles and three homers as the team's primary designated hitter. Former Brewers minor leaguer David Fry is back to being productive in a utility role with an .832 OPS.

Brent Suter, Los Angeles Angels

He has a 4.22 ERA in 14 games for the Angels, collecting 20 strikeouts in 21 innings of work. Former Brewers reliever Drew Pomeranz has been less successful with the Angels, posting a 7.71 ERA in 14 innings.

Eric Lauer, Toronto Blue Jays

After appearing in last year's World Series, he's struggled out of the gate this season with a 6.03 ERA in seven games (six starts) and 31 innings.

Danny Jansen,Texas Rangers

The Wisconsin native who played for the Brewers in the second half last year has a .647 OPS as the Rangers catcher with two homers and eight RBIs.

Tyler Alexander, Texas Rangers

It's been a great showing for the 2025 Brewers pitcher, with a 2.60 ERA over 17 relief outings despite a WHIP in excess of 1.5.

Jakob Junis, Texas Rangers

He's been steady as a rock out of the bullpen with a 1.76 ERA in 15 innings despite just six strikeouts (only four walks). Junis started the Brewers' home opener two years ago.

Joey Wiemer, Washington Nationals

After a white-hot start to the season, Wiemer has come back to earth only slightly, still sporting a .946 OPS in 66 plate appearances with three homers.

Trevor Richards, Chicago White Sox

Part of the package that came to the Brewers in the Adames deal, and then part of the package to acquire Rowdy Tellez, Richards posted a 1.93 ERA in nine relief appearances at Lehigh for the Phillies, with 26 strikeouts in 14 innings and just three walks, and he's now been acquired by the White Sox.

Other former Brewers around Major League Baseball

  • Hoby Milner, Chicago Cubs: The left-handed reliever has a 2.55 ERA in 18 innings.

  • Esteury Ruiz, Miami Marlins: The prospect traded to land WIlliam Contreras is back in the big leagues with two home runs and three stolen bases in 10 games.

  • Mauricio Dubón, Atlanta Braves: The utility man has delivered for his new team, with a .741 OPS and place as the team's shortstop. He has a pair of homers and 20 RBIs for one of baseball's best teams.

  • Victor Caratini, Minnesota Twins: His .558 OPS isn't pretty, but he is a backup catcher, after all. He has a home run and 13 RBIs in 27 games.

  • Jahmai Jones, Detroit Tigers: Briefly a Brewers player, Jones homered against his old team earlier this year and has a .640 OPS as a DH primarily hitting against lefties.

  • Andrew McCutchen, Texas Rangers: The 2022 Brewers DH has appeared in 25 games for Texas in his age-39 season, with a .620 OPS (one homer, five RBIs).

  • Gus Varland, Washington Nationals: Briefly in Milwaukee as a Rule 5 pick, he's become the Nationals closer and has four saves and a 3.07 ERA in 15 innings. He has 16 strikeouts to just three walks.

Former Brewers you may remember currently in AAA

  • Oliver Dunn, Charlotte Knights (White Sox). He has five homers and 24 RBIs with an .882 OPS. He also has seven stolen bases to share the team lead.

  • Orlando Arcia, St. Paul Saints (Twins). In 121 at-bats, he has six homers and an .869 OPS. He also has three stolen bases.

  • Shane Smith, Charlotte Knights (White Sox). He was never a Brewers player but was a high-profile minor leaguer who has fallen on hard times with the Sox. After starting the season as the team's opening-day starter against Milwaukee, he has a 5.27 ERA in 14 innings at Class AAA.

  • Joel Payamps, Gwinnett Stripers (Braves). He's made one appearance after getting outrighted to Triple-A.

  • Rowdy Tellez, Gwinnett Stripers (Braves). Tellez leads the team with seven homers and also has seven doubles, though he has struggled with a .198 batting average (despite a respectable .782 OPS).

  • Ben Gamel, Gwinnett Stripers (Braves). It's been a struggle for the 33-year old, who has a .684 OPS with three homers in 81 at-bats.

  • Bradley Blalock, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins). He has a 3.09 ERA in 32 innings over six starts at Class AAA with 31 strikeouts and just six walks.

  • Steward Berroa, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies). He briefly appeared in center field last year for the Brewers; he's had 21 games at Triple-A and has three homers, 12 RBIs and a strong .824 OPS. Former Brewers prospect Robert Moore, traded in the deal that brought Oliver Dunn to Milwaukee, has an elite .940 OPS and four homers in 45 at-bats.

  • Bryse Wilson, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies). In six games (five starts) and 27 innings, Wilson has a 7.90 ERA.

  • Bruce Zimmermann, Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals). He made one appearance for the big-league Brewers last year and spent the whole season in the minors, and now he has a 4-0 record and 3.03 ERA in seven starts for the Cardinals' Class AAA team, with a team-best 47 strikeouts and just eight walks in 36 innings.

  • Abraham Toro, Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals). The player traded for Chad Patrick has five homers and 15 RBIs in 106 at-bats with a .661 OPS and .198 batting average.

  • Vinny Capra, Worcester Red Sox (Red Sox). He has four homers in 84 at-bats and 10 doubles, posting a wild 1.051 OPS and .468 on-base percentage over 25 games. He is, essentially, one of the best hitters in the International League.

  • Anthony Seigler, Worcester Red Sox (Red Sox). Traded to Boston in the offseason and now healthy, Seigler has a .793 OPS in 48 at-bats.

  • Joe Ross, Reno Aces (Diamondbacks). In nine games (17 innings) he has a 5.40 ERA.

  • Jason Alexander, Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros). He has a 0-2 record in six starts with a 4.97 ERA, recording 20 strikeouts in 29 innings.
