SEOUL, April 23 (Reuters) - South Korea's government said on Thursday it would ensure no discrimination against U.S. tech companies, including ‌e-commerce firm Coupang, following a letter from U.S. lawmakers calling for ‌an end to unfair targeting of American businesses.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that ​Seoul was implementing measures to ensure U.S. digital companies did not face discriminatory measures or unnecessary barriers.

The assurance was included in a U.S.-South Korea joint fact sheet signed in November under a trade deal between the two countries, the ‌ministry said.

The response came after ⁠a letter was sent this week by some U.S. lawmakers to South Korean Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha, demanding an immediate end ⁠to "discriminatory regulatory actions" against American businesses operating in South Korea.

Led by the Republican Study Committee (RSC) member Michael Baumgartner, the lawmakers said: "systematic targeting of American companies such as ​Apple, Google, ​Meta, and Coupang is particularly concerning."

South ​Korea "recently leveraged a low-sensitivity data leak ‌in November 2025 as a pretext to launch a whole-of-government assault on Coupang," they said, citing a series of actions including threats to revoke its business licences and pressuring pension funds to divest its shares in the holding company.

"We are committed to ensuring that your government ceases its persecution of Coupang ‌and other American companies operating in South ​Korea," the letter said.

The Korean Foreign Ministry said ​the ongoing probe into Coupang's ​data breach was proceeding under domestic law and procedures, regardless ‌of the nationality of the company.

Coupang ​Korea, operated by ​U.S.-listed Coupang Inc., faced a public and lawmaker backlash in South Korea over a data breach that affected more than 30 million customers.

On Wednesday, ​the ministry said the ‌issues regarding Coupang should not be linked to ongoing security negotiations ​with Washington, which include South Korea's plan to build nuclear-powered submarines.

Fascinated by the moxie shown by the remaining sevenCatholic schools, Ackerman used the league’s plan as a case study for her students.

Six months later, she was named the league’s commissioner.

Since then, Ackerman, who announced she will retire in August, has presided over what might arguably be the greatest start-up business in college athletics history. In its early days, the Big East had no office, borrowing space in a Manhattan-based law firm. It had no benefits packages to offer to employees and no email accounts. Ackerman used her personal Gmail for correspondence.

The Big East has steadied its membership, since the conference’s revival, by adding Butler, Creighton and Xavier, luringUConnback to its rightful home, winning fourmen’s basketball national championships, fourwomen’s hoopstitles and now operating out of the Empire State Building.

Above all else, the Big East cleared space for college basketball in a world increasingly run roughshod by the pigskin.

Yet, Ackerman leaves as the Big East faces another critical juncture in its existence. Revenue sharing has underscored the line between those with and withoutfootball money. The Big East’s expected draw – that it could put all of its money into basketball – has proven more difficult to actually pull off. Largely because, while its member schools can put cash behind hoops, it has fewer funds to offer. It is no coincidence that the three schools that spent the most money – St. John’s, UConn andVillanova– finished 1-2-3 in the conference for men’s basketball.

Furthermore, the league’s hold on UConn, while stronger than tenuous, is less than airtight. The Huskies are always a dangling goalpost away from a jump to save football.

And while college basketball is coming off of its bestNCAA Tournamentviewership in more than 30 years, football continues to siphon all it can from the coffers. Calls to expand the tournament are largely fueled by football-first conferences looking not just to get more teams into the dance but also to earn more units from March Madness payouts.

McGlade also leaves a massive void

With the departure of Ackerman – coupled with the retirement of Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade – hoops is losing not just two powerful women, but two champions of its game. Both Jersey girls came up similarly: star players who pivoted into administration.

McGlade, a UNC graduate, first coached before heading into conference leadership and, like Ackerman, deftly and delicately shepherded the Atlantic 10 through its own vulnerability via thoughtful expansion. The A10 found a basketball steward in new commissioner, Dan Leibovitz, who cut his teeth as John Chaney’s assistant at Temple before charting his own path through coaching and on to admin.

Replacing Ackerman is even more critical in the big picture. Since its inception in 1979, the Big East has stood as the epicenter of college basketball. Its name synonymous with hoops excellence. When at its best, it is because the Big East leaned into its identity and on a leader who made basketball its priority.

Dave Gavitt started the league while finishing up his coaching career at Providence, and then tapped his right-hand man, Mike Tranghese, to take over. Only the respect owed to Tranghese helped the league stave off total implosion from its first football dalliance, back when it bloated its geographic reach to South Florida, Cincinnati and Virginia Tech.

As Ackerman was studying the league’s rebirth, the Big East rightfully was studying her. An outstanding player at Virginia, Ackerman worked first as legal counsel in the NBA before being tabbed by then-commissioner David Stern as his special assistant. She was one of the original NBA appointees to USA Basketball’s board of directors and, in 1996, was named the first president of the WNBA, guiding the league through its first eight years.

Ackerman’s unwavering devotion to basketball served as the stabilizer as she maneuvered the Big East through its very delicate rebirth that many observers initially dismissed as folly. It is easy to forget, given the league’s current haul of trophies, that a conference predicated on basketball would fold like a house of cards upon arrival.

Instead, the Big East flourished under Ackerman’s disciplined stewardship. While outsiders crowed for her to add more teams, she remained steadfast in keeping the league small but mighty, recognizing both its name-brand strength and the value of a true round-robin. She and the university presidents wisely kept their relationship with Madison Square Garden, refusing to budge from its historic tournament location, cementing the conference’s elite status.

And as the leader of the basketball version of the sixth league in the so-called Power 6 (the American Conference gets the nod in football), Ackerman had a seat at the big boys’ table – literally in her case.

Of the then-12 and now 10 female commissioners, Ackerman was the only woman in charge of a league with that sort of institutional muscle. Like that of her predecessors, her voice garnered respect based on a lifetime of service at the sport’s highest levels. She didn’t preside like an SEC king or prance like a Big Ten prince, but with a relentless, lived-in devotion to the game.

It is difficult to envision the Big East straying from this established blueprint.

However, money has a way of blurring a league’s vision. More leagues are pivoting toward corporate-minded administrators tasked with running collegiate athletics like the businesses they are.

Now is not the ideal time for the Big East to pivot from its roots. The league needs a basketball champion, a forward thinker and maybe above all else, a fighter. It may not be a fledgling start-up anymore, but it’s not a bad idea to think like one.

Another 13 people were injured when the trains collided between the towns of Hillerod and Kagerup, around 40km north ofCopenhagen.

Images of the scene on public broadcaster DR showed two yellow and grey trains, both with visible damage to the front, facing each other in a wooded area and surrounded by emergency services.

Dozens of emergency workers were called to what authorities described as a “serious accident”. Police said they have a “massive” presence on the scene.

"It is two local trains that have collided head-on," a spokesperson for the rescue services said.

"There are injuries among the passengers. Everyone is out of the trains, so no one is trapped... Large resources have been dispatched to the scene," the spokesperson added.

The injured have since been transported away from the scene of the accident in ambulances and helicopters, the fire department said on X.

“Rescue work at the scene is still ongoing,” the department said. “Passengers who are not physically injured have been gathered at the collection point.”

Police said technical investigations are underwayt at the scene which will “continue over a longer period of time”.

When the Lebanese Red Cross arrived to transport the wounded, they were obstructed by Israeli troops who “fired a stun grenade at the ambulance and targeted it with gunfire”, the ministry said. “They were unable to retrieve Khalil.”

“Amal had gone into a building to shelter, and the military attacked it,” a spokesperson for the Lebanese health ministry, toldThe Independent.“After that, no one was allowed to go back – the teams needed special tools to take her out from under the building. But the [Israeli military] was attacking any vehicle or anything that was going to search for Amal. She was stuck, wounded under the rubble for more than seven hours before we were able to reach her.”

The spokesperson added that medical aid was further delayed by roads being closed due to bombing and the fact that the Israeli military “attacked the ambulances with guns and grenades”.

“How is it permitted that a media person with no weapons is attacked and no one is allowed to help her when she is wounded?” they asked. “And in a ceasefire. What ceasefire is this? This is not the first time that medical convoys have been attacked. We have more than 100 casualties from amongst medical staff. This constitutes a blatant double violation: obstructing the rescue efforts of a citizen known for her civic media activism, and targeting an ambulance clearly marked with the Red Cross emblem.”

Lebanon’s prime minister, Nawaf Salam, has condemned the attack and accused Israel of repeatedly targeting journalists in what he described as an “established approach”. “Targeting journalists, obstructing access to them by relief teams, and even targeting their locations again after these teams arrive constitutes described war crimes,” he said.

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists has warned that Israel is engaging in the “deadliest and most deliberate effort to kill and silence journalists that the CPJ has ever documented”. A record 129 journalists were killed in 2025, according to the CPJ. Two-thirds of those were killed by Israel.

The Israeli military said: “Earlier today [Wednesday], IDF troops identified two vehicles in southern Lebanon that had departed from a military structure used by Hezbollah. The terrorists in the vehicles crossed the forward defence line and approached the troops in a manner that posed an immediate threat to their safety.

“After identifying the individuals as violating the ceasefire understandings and posing an imminent threat, the Israeli Air Force struck one of the vehicles. Subsequently, the structure from which the individuals had fled was also struck. Reports were received that two journalists were injured as a result of the strikes.

“The IDF is not preventing rescue teams from reaching the area. The details of the incident are under review. It should be noted that the map of the forward defence line has been published and the area has been evacuated. The IDF does not target journalists and acts to mitigate harm to them while maintaining the safety and security of its troops.”

After Ms Khalil was pronounced dead, the military added: “As said in the statement, the incident is under review.”

ACC Spring Wrap Players To Watch Football

Boston College

Running back Evan Dickens could boost the ground game for the Eagles as they come off a 2-10 season. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound back ran for 1,339 yards and 16 touchdowns last season at Liberty and set a tone with a 40-yard TD runin the team's third spring practice in March.

California

Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele will garner national attention in returning from a strong freshman season with the Golden Bears. Hecommitted in December to staying onto play undernew coach Tosh Lupoi,coming after he threw for 3,117 yards and 17 TDs while being named the ACC rookie of the week four times.

Clemson

The plan has been for redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina to take over the offense after the departure of Cade Klubnik. Vizzina has appeared in 14 games through three seasons, and he had a big outputin his lone college start against SMU(29 of 42 passing, 317 yards, three TDs) last year. He's set to helm an offense being directed by Chad Morris in his second stint as the Tigers' offensive coordinator.

Duke

Duke added graduate transfer Nick Del Grande from Coastal Carolina to help bolster its offensive line. The Blue Devils lost starting tackles Brian Parker II and Bruno Fina from last year's ACC title run, so there's an opportunity for the 6-4, 302-pound Del Grande with 35 career starts to jump right in up front.

Florida State

The Seminoles announced Auburn transfer Ashton Danielsas the starting quarterbackon Tuesday after the completion of spring drills. Coach Mike Norvell had praised Daniels' leadership and deep-ball passing touch.

Georgia Tech

Quarterback Alberto Mendozaspent the spring seemingly positioning himself to take overfor departed multi-year starter Haynes King. The Indiana transfer and younger brother of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza was the offensive captain for the team's recent spring game, with coach Brent Key saying over the weekend: “Alberto is the guy.”

Louisville

The Cardinalsbrought in QB Lincoln Kienholzafter three seasons at Ohio State, where he backed up Julian Sayin last year for a team that reached the College Football Playoff. Kienholz has thrown 36 career passes and could lead an offense that returns Isaac Brown as a career 2,000-yard rusher.

Miami

Darian Mensah has moved on from Duke to bethe QB for a Miami teamthat made the College Football Playoff and pushed all the way to the championship game. Mensah finished second last year in the Bowl Subdivision ranks in both passing yardage (3,973) and touchdown throws (34). He had three TD throws during scrimmage work at last weekend's spring game.

N.C. State

Linebacker Harvey Dyson offers transfer help for a unit that ranked 12th in the ACC in scoring defense (27.2) and 14th in total defense (411.9). Dyson started his career at Texas Tech before playing last year at Tulane, starting all 14 games for a CFP team. He finished as the team leader there with 11.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

North Carolina

Tight end Jordan Washington arrives as a transfer from Texas as the Tar Heels adapt to new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino's scheme. The 6-foot-4, 264-pound redshirt sophomore had seven catches for 109 yards and a score last year. Petrino described Washington as a “take charge, no-nonsense type of guy — and then has shown up on video playing that way."

Pittsburgh

Receiver Bryce Yates had 11 catches for 202 yards while playing 11 games as a true freshman. Notably, that included a 60-yard touchdown against Duquesne and a 68-yard catch against West Virginia, showing his big-play potential. Yates told reporters earlier this month he had gained a better understanding of coverages and his receiver routes.

Running back Dramekco Green is poised to take a key role in the backfield after the departure of TJ. Harden, who ran for a team-high 812 yards. The redshirt freshman is a hard-running back with a strong frame (6-foot, 203 pounds), running for 90 yards in five games last year.

Stanford

Tight end Benji Blackburn could have a bigger role undernew coach Tavita Pritchard. That comes with Sam Roush headed to the NFL after tallying 89 catches with four TD grabs the past two seasons. The 6-6, 260-pound Blackburn made five starts last year, finishing with nine catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Syracuse

Quarterback Steve Angeli helped Syracuse start 3-1 last year, including a win at Clemson, before going downto a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.His recovery ahead of preseason camp and next season will prove critical, though he said he “could go right now if I wanted to” when speaking to reporters during spring drills. "When it's time to play real ball and everything matters, our first game, I'll be good to go,” Angeli said.

Virginia

Receiver Rico Flores Jr. has gone from Notre Dame to UCLA and now Virginia, which is coming off an 11-win season. Offensive coordinator Des Kitchings said the 6-2, 205-pound graduate student has worked to “build a rapport” on deep throws with QBs but is also willing to block in the run game — saying Flores is ”sold out" to do whatever it takes to win.

Virginia Tech

Duke transfer receiver Que'Sean Brown is positioned to bolster the Hokies' receiving corps. The redshirt junior had 64 catches for 846 yards and five touchdowns for last year's ACC champs, starting 12 games. He had a 14-yard touchdown grab in the Hokies' spring game last weekend.

Wake Forest

Defensive back Davaughn Patterson could be a key piece of a defense that might have to lead the way for Jake Dickert's second season with the Demon Deacons. He's been a two-year starter with 154 tackles the past two seasons, showing the ability to help in coverage or close to the line of scrimmage.

Anderson, a three-time All-Star and 2002 World Series champion with theLos Angeles Angels, passed away last week at the age of 53, stunning the baseball world.

The cause of death was acute necrotizing pancreatitis, according to the Coroner Division of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Anderson's wife Teresa had previouslytold ESPNshe thought her husband had died of a heart attack.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, "necrotizing pancreatitis happens when pancreatitis inflammation is so severe that it causes tissue death (necrosis)."

“Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class, and loyalty throughout his career and beyond. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Anderson family," the Angels said in a statement on April 17.
