Lindsey Vonn's ACL is '100% gone.' But not her chance of winning Olympic gold Sunday.

February 08, 2026
Lindsey Vonn's ACL is '100% gone.' But not her chance of winning Olympic gold Sunday.

MILAN — Ifa torn ACLhasn't stopped Lindsey Vonn's pursuit of an Olympic gold medal at age 41, can the world's best skiers?

NBC Universal

It's the question on the mind of every spectator ofthe Milan Cortina Winter Olympicsas the women's downhill final begins Sunday.

The downhill was already one of the signature events of Alpine skiing, as women carve down mountains, around curves and over jumps, pushing 80 mph. And Vonn was already, without hyperbole, the biggest star of these Olympics. Yet Sunday's competition in Cortina, Italy, has drawn even more intrigue than is typical as the world awaits the answer to whether Vonn can somehow medal only nine days aftershe crashedand ruptured a ligament crucial to stabilizing her left knee.

Vonn will now attempt to win the downhill 16 years after she did it at the Vancouver Olympics. She has won two Olympic bronze medals in her career, as well, in downhill in 2018 and super-G in 2010.

When Vonn announced she was coming out of retirement in 2024, she was already facing the twin challenges of health and rust; injuries had driven her into retirement five years earlier. Yet a surgically replaced right knee and a new coach had given Vonn a surge of confidence and what she called her most consistently healthy season in a decade. Both helped her finish on the podium in all five World Cup races she competed in this season, including two victories, making her the oldest ever to win on the prestigious skiing circuit. Those performances seemed to put an end to questions about whether her ambitions for a medal in Cortina were real or a quixotic quest.

But her crash in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, late last month, which required an airlift, cast doubt on her ability to again topple the world's best skiers.

Vonn did not undergo surgery, however, and has worn a brace while going throughtwo successful testsof the knee during training runs Friday and Saturday, when she reached 78 mph to finish with thethird-fastest time of the dayuntil poor weather shut down training about halfway through the field.

In the final, Vonn will have the advantage of familiarity. She has called Cortina's course her favorite to race and a major factor why she wanted to mount the comeback for the Olympics at all. Of her 84 World Cup victories, 12 have come in Cortina.

Yet Vonn will also have to push her knee further than in either of her two training runs, when she could be seen pulling back around some turns so as not to exert too much strain before the main event. One of her top competitors for a medal could be her compatriot, the American Breezy Johnson, who had Saturday's top time in training.

ACL injuries have long been among the most devastating in sports, typically requiring at least six months of strenuous recovery. That she could compete in an Olympics just over a week after a tear had drawn some incredulity, such as from a doctor known for his social media account analyzing sports injuries.

"My ACL was fully functioning until last Friday,"Vonn responded Saturday."Just because it seems impossible to you doesn't mean it's not possible. And yes, my ACL is 100% ruptured. Not 80% or 50%. It's 100% gone."

But not her hopes of gold.

Jets hire Seth Ryan, son of Rex Ryan, as offensive passing game coordinator, AP source says

The New York Jets are hiring Seth Ryan, son of former head coach Rex Ryan, as their offensive passing game coordinator, a person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Seth Ryan spent the last five seasons with Detroit while serving in various roles, including as the Lions' assistant tight ends coach last year.

Ryan now will assistnew Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced the hiring. ESPN first reported that Ryan was being added to head coach Aaron Glenn's staff.

The 31-year-old Ryan joins his father, who led the team from 2009-14 and currently is an ESPN analyst, and late grandfather Buddy, New York's defensive line coach from 1968 — as part of the franchise's first and still only Super Bowl appearance — through 1975, as the third generation of a coaching family to be on the sideline for the Jets.

The younger Ryan was a wide receiver at Summit High School, a few miles from where his father coached the Jets at their facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. He later played at Clemson and was part of the squad that beat Alabama in the College Football Playoff national championship in January 2017.

He began his coaching career with the Chargers in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach before joining the Lions as an assistant wide receivers coach in 2021 — when Glenn was Detroit's defensive coordinator under Dan Campbell.

Reich was hired by Glenn on Wednesday to replace Tanner Engstrand, whoagreed to part ways with the team last weekafter one year running the Jets' offense during a 3-14 season. The move was part of an offseason coaching staff overhaul by Glenn, whohired Brian Duker as his defensive coordinatorto replace Steve Wilks.

This 1976 Classic Ranked the 'Only Dud on an Otherwise Perfect Album'

This 1976 Classic Ranked the 'Only Dud on an Otherwise Perfect Album'

Even the most critically acclaimed and best-selling albums in rock history generally have at least one or two songs that listeners don't lovequiteas much as the rest of the record. Sometimes a song seems out of place, other times it's just not up to the same standards as the rest of the tunes...but whatever the reason, fans often find themselves skipping over certain less-than-stellar offerings from their (otherwise) favorite bands.

That's whyRolling Stonedecided to rank 50 of the most "terrible songs on great albums" in 2025...and the tunes that made the list are guaranteed to have plenty ofmusiclovers nodding in agreement, while others will surely be filled with indignation at seeing their personal faves slammed.

Some of the opinions on the list are hard to argue with, to be fair. In fact, in several of the cases, the artists themselves didn't even like the songs; for example, #50 went to the Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" fromAbbey Road, whichJohn Lennonopenly admitted to hating.Bob Dylan, meanwhile, seemed to blame co-writerJacques LevyforDesire's "Joey," about the mobsterJoey Gallo, which took the #32 spot. ("Jacques Levy wrote the words," he said in a 2009 interview withBill Flanagan. "Jacques had a theatrical mind, and he wrote a lot of plays. So the song might have been theater of the mind. I just sang it.")

While it's generally considered one of the most perfect albums in rock history (and continues to be one of the most profitable),Hotel Californiaby the Eagles also came under fire for a specific track: "Try and Love Again," ranked at #12 on the list.

While late bassist/singerRandy Meisnerwas, as the article put it, a "man of many talents" (prime example: his lead vocals on "Take It to the Limit"), some fans apparently feel his songwriting skills weren't on the same level as bandmatesDon Henley,Glen FreyandJoe Walsh.

"And these guys were operating at their absolute peak whenHotel Californiacame around,"Rolling Stonepointed out. "This was Meisner's last album with the group, and they included his country-rock tune 'Try and Love Again' on the second side. It's the only dud on the otherwise perfect album."

"Dud" or not, it seems there are plenty of fans who like "Try and Love Again" just fine: At the time of this writing, the track has 23,567,302 streams onSpotify. By comparison, the song "Hotel California" has 2,106,918,000, but you know what they say...you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.

Sheriff leading Guthrie investigation spotted at basketball game as family pleads again with alleged ransomers

EXCLUSIVE:TUCSON, Ariz. —  The sheriff investigating the apparent kidnapping of "Today" show anchorSavannah Guthrie'smother was spotted sitting near the front row at a college basketball game Saturday night, even as Guthrie and her two siblings posted a plaintive plea on Instagram for the safe return of their mother.

Fox News Digital obtained photos of Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who is facing increased scrutiny as the investigation intoNancy Guthrie's disappearance drags on, attending a matchup between the University of Arizona and Oklahoma State. Early Sunday morning will mark one week since Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her suburban Tucson home.

The source of the photos, who requested anonymity, slammed Nanos for attending the game while the search continues.

"I think it wasn't a good move. This whole thing being so fresh and nationwide, maybe worldwide," the source said. "I don't think it was good for him to do it. He's a major part of the investigation, so it didn't look good to me. Very sad to see him at the Arizona basketball game."

Only minutes after the game ended, Savannah Guthrie and siblings Annie and Camron shared a third message on the NBC star's Instagram page, pleading with possible ransomers to contact them.

"We received your message and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her," Savannah Guthrie said, seated between her brother and sister. "This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay."

Who Is Chris Nanos? Pima County Sheriff With 50 Years In Law Enforcement Heads Nancy Guthrie Investigation

On Friday, a second purported statement from alleged kidnappers was sent to 13 News in Tucson. Details of the contents of the statement have not been made public, but the message did not provide proof of life.

Nanos has come under firetwice in recent days for his handling of the investigation.

Fox News Digital learned on Friday that a critical aspect of the investigation was delayed due to Nanos' dispute with the pilot of the sheriff's department's high-tech search aircraft. The pilot was demoted to street patrol after the dispute.

Consequently, the plane's takeoff was delayed for three hours after the investigation began.

"Three hours in a search for a vulnerable adult is an eternity," a law enforcement source with knowledge of the situation told Fox News Digital.

The Pima County Deputy's Organization said it disagreed with the decision to transfer the "high-performing pilot" at the time, as it left a crucial law enforcement asset short-staffed.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos speaks to reporters in Arizona.

"The pilot even made a personal plea to Sheriff Nanos but was ignored, and he was sent to patrol," a union official told Fox Digital. "This is unfortunately typical of Sheriff Nanos' leadership style. The most experienced Search and Rescue deputy in the department was transferred to Patrol late last year, without a replacement, simply because he'd 'been there too long.' This left a critical unit short-staffed during one of the highest profile searches in PCSD history and during the busiest time of year for Search and Rescue."

Nanos also admitted in a Friday interview with theArizona Republicthat he madeother missteps earlyin the investigation.

He said that his department released Guthrie's home as a crime scene too soon, only toreturn days laterto recover additional evidence. Nanos acknowledged that the scene should have remained secured longer and that other agencies could have been called in earlier.

He has receivedscathing criticism on Xfrom those following along with the investigation, where he has been called a "bumbling idiot" and a "complete embarrassment."

Nanos has been alaw enforcement officialfor half a century, beginning his career with the El Paso Police Department in Texas in 1976.

In 1984, he became a corrections officer in Pima County, and the next year was promoted to deputy.

The next year, he was appointed sheriff, but lost an election in 2016 to retain the position. He ran again in 2020, winning by a narrow margin.

In the weeks leading up to that election, Nanosreportedlyplaced his opponent Lappin, a lieutenant at the Pima County Jail, on administrative leave, ordering her not to discuss the reasoning for his decision. He did the same to Sgt. Aaron Cross, an outspoken opponent of Nanos and the head of the Pima County Deputies Organization.

Cross reportedly campaigned against Nanos, holding a sign on a street corner saying "Deputies Don't Want Nanos," just before he was placed on leave. Nanos claimed Cross campaigned against him while wearing his Pima County sheriff's uniform in breach of department rules, which Cross denied. Federal appeals court upholds Trump mass detention policy for illegal immigrants

Afederal appeals courton Friday upheld the Trump administration's mass detention policy, allowing illegal immigrants to be detained without bond.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that the Department of Homeland Security (Dhs) can lawfully deny bond hearings to immigrants arrested nationwide under the Constitution and federal immigration law.

Writing in dissent, Circuit Judge Dana M. Douglas said that the members of Congress who passed the Immigration and Nationality Act roughly 30 years ago "would be surprised to learn it had also required the detention without bond of two million people."

Douglas noted that some of the people detained are "the spouses, mothers, fathers, and grandparentsof American citizens."

The ruling stems from two separate cases filed last year against the Trump administration, both involving Mexican nationals who had lived in the U.S. for more than a decade and were not considered flight risks, according to their attorneys.
