Michigan basketball adds internationally experienced assistant coach

Michigan basketballappears to have rounded out its coaching staff.

USA TODAY

While the program has not made an official announcement, Mody Maor is listed as an assistant basketball coach in the athletic department's staff directory.Maor, 40, has served as a head coach for the Nagasaki Velca in the Japanese B League as well as the New Zealand Breakers of the Australia Basketball League.

It seems as though Maor will replace former assistant coach Justin Joyner, who spent two years in Ann Arbor under Dusty May before he left to become Oregon State's coach earlier this spring.

A banner recognizing the Michigan Wolverines as NCAA men’s basketball national champions hangs inside the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

Maor was born in Los Angeles before moving to Israel when he was eight. He began his coaching career in 2012 as an assistant Hapoel Holon (2012-14) in that country, then continued as an assistant with Maccabi Ashdod (2016-17) – winning a title in 2017 – and then taking over Hapoel Jerusalem (2017-18) before going to New Zealand.

"The first thing you look at is who you're building your team with. We wanted to bring people that want to be part of something. The first step is getting everyone connected to the same goal, to having one common goal,"Maor told ESPN in 2022in a story written about how he "transformed" the New Zealand Breakers. "Once you have those goals, it's everybody understanding why you do things and how that connects to the goal.

"I think we've done that really well and the guys have bought into those ideas and those concepts, I think that's what you see."

The Breakers advanced to the ABL grand final series in 2023, before falling in five games.

May, who just led Michigan to a national championship and has gone 64-13 in two years in Ann Arbor, hasn't been afraid to go overseas to help his team. He has landed several talents who grew up in other parts of the world including Aday Mara (Spain), Oscar Goodman (New Zealand), Vlad Goldin (Russia), Malick Kordel (Germany) and Marcus Moller (Denmark).

Now he appears to be adding international flair to the coaching ranks.

Dua Lipa files $15 million lawsuit against Samsung for using her face without permission

Dua Lipa files $15 million lawsuit against Samsung for using her face without permission

Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for $15 million in a fight over the use of the pop star’s image.

The Independent US

TheBritish singer,30, filed the massive lawsuit against the electronics giant Friday, alleging thatSamsungused a picture of her face to sell TVs without getting her permission or offering her any payment.

“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever,” the filing alleges. “Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”

According to the complaint,Samsungallegedly began putting Lipa’s image on marketing materials and cardboard boxes carrying its TVs all over the world at the start of 2025. Lipa owns the copyright to the picture in question, which was taken backstage at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024.

When Lipa found out about the advertising, she asked Samsung to stop using the picture, but the suit alleges that the company was “dismissive and callous” and refused her request.

The suit alleges that Samsung has earned money from using Lipa’s picture and appearing to have her endorsement, which it does not. The filing includes comments from Lipa’s fans on X, which suggest that some customers were inspired to buy Samsung’s TVs because they thought Lipa had endorsed the product.

“I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” one comment quoted in the complaint said. Another wrote on Instagram, “I’d get that TV just because Dua Lipa is on it.”

Lipa’s lawsuit accuses Samsung of copyright infringement, right of publicity violation and false endorsement. The superstar is seeking at least $15 million in damages, as well as the profits that Samsung made due to their alleged use of her image.

Her team alleges that Samsung violated California’s right of publicity law, a federal Lanham Act claim and trademark claims, which protect celebrities from their public identities being used for unauthorized commercial reasons.

Samsung and Lipa’s representatives did not immediately returnThe Independent’s request for comment.

This is not the first time that Lipa has had to protect her image in court. Last year,Lipa won a lawsuit against two songwritersthat claimed she copied the melody of her hit song “Levitating” from disco tracks they had written.

SongwritersL Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer sued Lipa in 2022and accused her of copying their 1979 track “Wiggle and Giggle All Night” and their 1980 song “Don Diablo.” However, the judge concluded that the similar elements of the songs “lacked sufficient originality alone” to beprotected under copyright law.

Former Polish justice minister who faces prosecution at home says he's traveled from Hungary to US

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A former Polish justice minister sought in his homeland for alleged abuse of power says he has traveled from Hungary to the U.S., prompting prosecutors in Poland to say Monday that they're investigating whether he was assisted in evading liability.

Associated Press

Zbigniew Ziobro was a key figure in the government led by the nationalist conservative Law and Justice party that ran Poland between 2015 and 2023. That administrationestablished political controlover key judicial institutions by stacking higher courts with friendly judges and punishing its critics with disciplinary action or assignments to faraway locations.

Ziobro announced in January that he had been grantedasylum in Hungary, then led by nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

On Sunday, Ziobro told right-wing Polish broadcaster Republika that he had arrived in the United States the previous day — coinciding with the inauguration in Budapest of Orbán's successor,Péter Magyar, who defeated the longtime leaderin an electionlast month. He said that he was using a document granted to him along with his right to asylum, Polish news agency PAP reported.

Current Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s governmentcame to powerin late 2023 with ambitions to roll back the judicial changes made by its predecessor, butefforts to undo themhave been blocked by two successive presidents aligned with the nationalist right.

In October, prosecutors requested the lifting of Ziobro’s parliamentary immunityto press chargesagainst him. They allege among other things that Ziobro misused a fund for victims of violence, including for the purchase ofIsraeli Pegasus surveillance software.

Tusk’s party says Law and Justice used Pegasus to spy illegally on political opponents while in power. Ziobro says he acted lawfully.

On Monday, the national prosecutor's office said in a social media post that it was investigating the whereabouts of Ziobro, and looking into whether other individuals assisted him in "fleeing and evading criminal liability, thereby obstructing the investigation into the justice fund."

Current Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek said in a post on X Sunday evening that Poland had invalidated Ziobro's travel documents, including his diplomatic passport, and that Warsaw will ask the U.S. and Hungary about the legal basis for Ziobro to leave Hungarian territory and enter the United States.

It's quite typical for celebrities to adopt a stage name for their work in the entertainment world. While these names frequently derive from variations of their given names or middle names, others take a more imaginative route when selecting the name they wish to be recognized by. This practice is particularly common among singers, as their names become their trademark and persona, while simultaneously helping to maintain boundaries between their private lives and public image.

One prominent rapper and actor who opted for a stage name throughout his entertainment career is Snoop Dogg, whorecently acquired a soccer team in Wales.. And while he initially performed as 'Snoop Doggy Dogg', he eventually condensed it to 'Snoop Dogg', which remains how millions of supporters worldwide recognize him, even 35 years into his professional journey.

However, some admirers have been astonished to discover the rapper's actual name, as it took them nearly three decades to uncover. This was true for one individual, who posted toReddit's'Today I learned' community to reveal their discovery.

"TIL Snoop Dogg's real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. His "Snoop Dogg" nickname came from his mother who thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts," the post's title stated, as they proceeded to reference the rapper's Wikipedia entry.

Snoop Dogg has openly shared how his mother inspired his iconic stage name. During an appearance on theKelly Clarksonshow, he explained the origins of his moniker.

"How did you end up going by Snoop?" Kelly asked the rapper, questioning whether the nickname initially began as 'Snoopy'.

"As a kid, I watched Charlie Brown, and I watched Snoopy so much, my mother was like 'you watch him so damn much, you're starting to look like him'," Snoopy revealed in the interview.

He continued: "And I swear to you, my whole life, I have had 50 years with my mother, and she never called me by my real name a day in her life. She called me Snoopy, Snoopy, Snoopy, that's it. That's all."

Snoop Dogg's mother, Beverly Tate, tragically passed away on October 24, 2021, aged 70, following a battle with an undisclosed illness. Snoop Dogg announced her death on social media, calling her an "angel" and subsequently honoring her memory during his shows.

Viewers quickly flooded the comments section with reactions, with many applauding his mother for the distinctive nickname.

"Even though this is the first time I'm hearing, about how Snoop Dogg got his stage name, and listening to his story I had a feeling that's how he'd gotten the name, because it makes sense," one viewer wrote.

Another commented: "So cute he went with his mom's given nickname.

"I had NO IDEA that WHERE SNOOP DOG CAME FROM!!!!" another revealed, while a fourth person commented: "Awe love this. Momma snoop must be the cutest. super vibe Momma Snoop."

Evansville car wash manager who helped nab Casey and Vicky White dies

Evansville car wash manager who helped nab Casey and Vicky White dies

EVANSVILLE — James Stinson, the Evansville car wash manager who was a central figure in the sensational 2022 manhunt for Alabama fugitives Casey White and Vicky White, died Thursday at age 72.

USA TODAY

Stinson was outside his home on South Weinbach Avenue Thursday night when he suffered a medical event, Vanderburgh County Coroner Bryan Underwood told the Courier & Press.

"He was cutting grass trying to beat the rain, I think, and sat down on a park bench in front of his house, and didn't quite make it," Underwood said. "I'm pretty sure it was definitely a heart attack."

Vicky White, assistant director at the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, Alabama, walked inmate and accused murderer Casey White out of jail on April 29, 2022. The Whites, who were romantically involved, were not related.

The resulting intense multi-state manhunt sparked a national and international media frenzy for 11 days, until the dramaended in Evansville on May 9, 2022, with Casey's capture and Vicky's death by self-inflicted gunshot.

Stinson's role in the manhunt would be hotly debated afterward.

It started with a suspicious character in a car wash bay

Stinson stepped into the story on the morning of May 4, the day after the Whites showed up at Weinbach Car Wash. He called Evansville-Vanderburgh Central Dispatch to report he had found a dark, four-door Ford F-150 truck with a Tennessee license plate abandoned in a wash bay, the keys still inside and windows down.

Casey White would later say he'd hoped someone would steal the vehicle. But Stinson didn't know all that then.

The car wash manager reported seeing a suspicious character loitering in a wash bay on video, but he did not mention Casey or Vicky White. Later he would insist he'd suspected from the start it was Casey on the video, but he didn't say so because another man ridiculed him for thinking the fugitives would come to his car wash.

On the night before the Whites were apprehended in Evansville, Stinson agreed that the next morning he would meet U.S. marshals task force members to review his video footage of Casey White. But he called local television station WEVV to the scene shortly before the fugitive hunters arrived, explaining later that he got steamed because the marshals didn't show up by the appointed time. The marshals, who rely on secrecy to avoid tipping off their targets, arrived at Weinbach Car Wash to find the news crew.

They insisted they hadn't told Stinson they were on the trail of Casey and Vicky White, butStinson insisted they had.

Later that day marshals task force members would plot to pin the Whites into their room at Motel 41 in Evansville with a heavy-duty armored rescue vehicle and force them to surrender without bloodshed or gunfire — butthe fugitives left the motel before the ARV could arrive.

The car chase that ultimately ended with Casey White's capture and Vicky White's death by self-inflicted gunshot wound outside Anchor Industries lasted only a few minutes.

In the weeks and months that followed the end of the Alabama fugitive saga in Evansville, Stinson wascelebrated by many who thought he should get reward money. But privately and publicly, marshals task force members and law enforcement in Alabama and Indiana criticized him for allegedly blowing their chance to apprehend the Whites without bloodshed andexaggerating his role in the case.

A detailed timeline of the case later produced by the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office pointed a finger of blame squarely at Stinson.

"Casey (White) would later tell officers that they had seen on the news that the F-150 had been discovered due to the fact that Mr. Stinson notified the media," the timeline stated. "They were therefore packing up to leave."

Weinbach Car Wash manager James Stinson, left, mimics the movements of fugitive Casey White while giving a tour to retired sheriff of Lauderdale County, Alabama Rick Singleton in Evansville, Ind., Friday, Oct. 13, 2023. Stinson discovered an Ford F-150 truck with a Tennessee license plate abandoned in a wash bay by Casey White May 4, 2022. Singleton was the designated spokesman to national and international media when Vicky White, assistant director at the Lauderdale County Detention Center, walked inmate and accused murderer Casey White out of jail on April 29, 2022.

A lasting friendship

In the immediate aftermath, Stinson formed a lasting friendship with then-Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton. As designated spokesman to national and international media during the manhunt, Singleton had become the public face of the drama.

Stinson visited Singleton in Florence and Singleton returned the favor in Evansville in October 2023. The former Alabama sheriffvisited Stinson in Evansvilleon the way to visit his adult daughter and her family in Indianapolis. There Singleton saw the car wash for the first time.

Singleton told the Courier & Press Friday that Stinson was a memorable character whose role in capturing the Whites marked a pivotal moment in the manhunt.

The fourth anniversary of the famous escape rolled around on the calendar just more than a week ago, Singleton wistfully noted.

"I was thinking about calling (Stinson), and I never did," he said. "He was a unique individual, that's for sure. He was very likable. He was a lot of fun to be around.

"I know he and the marshals didn't necessarily see eye-to-eye on some things — but at the end of the day he reported that truck, and that's what started the ball rolling."

Most people go their entire lifetimes without becoming part of a crime story that captures the public's imagination as Stinson did, Singleton said.

"After it all played out the way it did, they were captured right there in (Evansville) — it's a unique experience in a person's life," Singleton said. "It certainly was in his."

Former Ravens QB Cooper Rush to participate in Vikings minicamp tryout

Former Ravens QB Cooper Rush to participate in Vikings minicamp tryout

Rookie minicamps are typically designed to introduce draft picks and undrafted free agents to NFL life, but now and then, they also become an opportunity for veterans searching for another chance. That’s exactly where formerBaltimore Ravensquarterback Cooper Rush currently finds himself.

USA TODAY

According toannouncements from both the Minnesota VikingsandPro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Rush has been invited to participate in theVikings’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. While the setting may seem unusual for a veteran with regular-season starting experience, the move makes plenty of sense for both sides.

Minnesota needs extra arms for practice reps, especially after failing to draft or sign a rookie quarterback following the 2026 NFL Draft. Rush, meanwhile, gets another opportunity to remind teams he can still provide value as an experienced backup.

Cooper Rush brings experience to Vikings minicamp as he seeks his new opportunity

Despite bouncing around in recent years, Rush is far from an unknown commodity. The 32-year-old has appeared in 42 regular-season games during his NFL career while making 16 starts. He compiled a decent and respectable 9-7 record along the way.

Most of that experience came during his lengthy stint with theDallas Cowboys, where he spent seven seasons serving as one of the league’s more dependable reserve quarterbacks.Rush later joined the Ravens, though his stay in Baltimore proved short-lived.

The organization eventually released himafter elevating Tyler Huntley into the primary backup role behind Lamar Jackson. Now, the veteran quarterback finds himself attempting to extend his NFL career yet again.

The Vikings are keeping their options open. They already have four quarterbacks on the roster, so this minicamp invite does not necessarily signal an imminent signing. Still, teams often use these workouts to evaluate veteran depth, leadership presence, and potential emergency options for later in the offseason.

The Vikings also invited veteran wide receiver Trenton Irwin and offensive lineman Brandon Walton to participate, further illustrating that rookie minicamp sometimes serves broader purposes than simply evaluating first-year players.

For Rush, however, this weekend carries extra significance. Opportunities can become increasingly difficult to find as quarterbacks move deeper into their thirties, particularly backups without long-term starting resumes. Still, experienced veterans who understand protections, timing, and how to stabilize a locker room can often linger around the league longer than expected. We'll see if such is true for Rush.
