Security guard takes 'full responsibility' for Chappell Roan hotel controversy, confirms he wasn't working for pop star

A security guard has claimed responsibility for the controversial incident in a Brazilian hotel involvingJude Law's daughter andChappell Roan.

Pascal Duvier, a "protection specialist" and martial artist, said that he was the person who reprimanded Law's ex, Catherine Harding, over the behavior of the ex-couple's 11-year daughter Ava Law in a Brazilian hotel on Sunday. Harding's husband, soccer player Jorginho, had previously accused fellow hotel patron Roan of employing the security guard, but Duvier said he had no connection to the "Pink Pony Club" singer.

"I do not normally address online rumors, but the accusations currently circulating are false and constitute defamation," Duvier said in astatement on Instagramon Wednesday. "I take full responsibility for the interactions on March 21st. I was at the hotel on behalf of another individual, and I was not part of the personal security team of Chappell Roan. The actions I took were not on behalf of Chappell Roan, her personal security team, her management, or any other individuals."

Duvier went on to explain that he "made a judgment call" influenced by "information we obtained from the hotel, events I had witnessed in the days prior and the heightened overall security risk of our location."

He concluded, "My sole interaction with the mother was calm and with good intentions, and the outcome of the encounter is regretful."

EW has reached out to representatives for Roan, Jorginho, and Jude Law for comment.

A spokesperson for Roan previously identified Duvier as the individual who approached Harding in the hotel. "Contrary to published reports, Pascal Duvier was not Chappell Roan's personal security in South America," the representative told EW in a statement on Wednesday morning. "Chappell Roan has used the same personal security guard this year in Australia, France and South America."

Harding and Ada Law were in São Paulo to see Roan perform at Lollapalooza. Jorginho claimed that his stepdaughter was "excited" when she thought she recognized Roan while eating breakfast in the hotel, and that she walked toward the musician's table to confirm her identity. "She didn't say anything, didn't ask for anything," the soccer player claimed.

He then claimed that "a large security guard" berated Harding, "saying she shouldn't allow my daughter to 'disrespect' or 'harass' other people. He said that Ada was "extremely shaken and cried a lot," and lashed out at Roan and her fans at the end of his statement: "WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION."

Roanresponded to Jorginho's claimson Instagram shortly thereafter, claiming that she "didn't even see a woman and a child" in the hotel. "No one came up to me. No one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel," she said. "I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. They did not come up to me — they weren't doing anything!"

Roan continued, "I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children — that is crazy. I'm sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming that you would do something, and if you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that."

Harding thenshared her own perspective on the incidentin her own video on Sunday. "I know that Chappell has responded saying that it wasn't her security and she didn't do it," she said. "100% this security guard was not a security guard of the hotel, that's what I can say. He looks after artists. So I don't know if it was her personal security guard, but he was with her. That is all I know."

Harding continued, "Did she send him to do it? Again, I don't know. I would like to hope not, but at the same time, I think that you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity to make sure that the people who work for you and act on your behalf are acting on your behalf. So would he do that if he didn't have her authority to do so? I don't know."

A spokesperson for Roanreiterated that the singer was not involved in the situationin a statement to EW on Tuesday. "Chappell was not aware of any interaction between this mother / daughter and a third party security officer," the spokesperson said. "She did not see them at breakfast in her hotel, as she said in her video. She did not direct her personal security or anyone on her team to interact with them. Chappell holds her own teams to the highest standards and has zero tolerance for any kind of aggressive behavior towards her or her fans."

Cuban president says Raúl Castro involved in US talks that are in early stages

Cuban president says Raúl Castro involved in US talks that are in early stages

HAVANA (AP) — Former Cuban PresidentRaúl Castrois involved in talks between the island and the United States, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said Wednesday.

Associated Press

The talks, which Diaz-Canel said are in the early stages, come at a time of increasing tensions between the two nations, with Cuba plagued bynationwide blackoutsresulting from a crumbling power grid and an ongoing oil blockade implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened tariffs on any country that provides oil to Cuba. Trump recently said he'd have "the honor of taking Cuba" soon.

The talks overall are being handled collectively by the Cuban government, Díaz-Canel told Spanish leftist leader Pablo Iglesias in a videotaped interview that lasted more than an hour and was shared by state media. Though Diaz-Canel became president in 2018, 94-year-old revolutionary leader, brother of Fidel Castro, is still considered the most powerful person in the nation.

Iglesias was in Cuba as part of a delegation of some 600 activists from 33 countries who arrived last weekto deliver humanitarian aid.

"A process of conversations that leads to an agreement is a long process," Díaz-Canel told Iglesias, who produced the interview for his crowdfunded TV channel, Canal RED.

"First, we must build a channel for dialogue. Then, we must build common agendas of interests for the parties, and the parties must demonstrate their intention to move forward and truly commit to the program based on the discussion of those agendas," Díaz-Canel said.

In late January, Trumpthreatened tariffs on any countrythat sells or provides oil to Cuba as he pushes for a change in the island's political model.

Although the initial threats were formally softened, the embargo has remained in place, and the island has not received any fuel shipments in the past three months.

Prolonged power outages and a near-paralysis of economic and social life are the visible consequences on the island, which in the last week experienced two nationwide blackouts that left millions without electricity as Cuba's power grid continues to crumble.

The U.S. has said that Cuba was in negotiations, and Trump has threatened that he would take over the island soon.

Díaz-Canel was more nuanced in his response and said his officials and those from the U.S. State Department "held recent talks."

He also addressed speculation surrounding the role thatCastro, would be playing a role in these overture.

"The other thing they've tried to speculate about is that there are divisions within the leadership of the revolution," Díaz-Canel said, not clarifying who he was referring to.

Castro "is one of those who, along with me and in collaboration with other branches of the (Communist) Party, the government, and the State, has guided how we should conduct this dialogue process, if this dialogue process takes place," the president added.

He noted that Castro is "the historical leader of this revolution, even though he has relinquished his responsibilities," and that he maintains a "prestige earned with the people" due to "historical recognition that no one can deny."

Raúl Castro, who succeeded his brother, Fidel, as president, led historic talks with former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014 that led to the reopening of embassies and re-establishment of diplomatic relations.

Trump has opposed such policy, tightening sanctions even further, exacerbating a deep economic crisis to the extreme of the current energy blockade.

Meanwhile, Francisco Pichón, resident coordinator of the United Nations in Cuba, warned that if the situation continued to spiral it could provoke a "humanitarian crisis". Pichón and other officials said it would require $94 million to address the island's energy crisis and hurricane damage from last year.

The crippled energy grid was slated to cut off 96,000 people, around 11,000 of them children, from getting surgeries they need, and cause 30,000 minors to fall behind of their vaccine schedules, he estimated.

It's already cut around a million people who depend on water deliveries from trucks, off from access to water.

The Un officials highlighted the desperate need for fuel to enter Cuba, but also solar power as a potential solution to keep schools and hospitals up and running and to pump water for irrigation.

"If the current situation continues and the country's fuel reserves are depleted, we do fear an accelerated deterioration with the possible loss of lives," said Francisco Pichón, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Cuba.

Two British men detained in a suspected antisemitic hate crime are released on bail

LONDON (AP) — British police said Thursday that two men arrested in connection with anarson attack that destroyed four ambulancesowned by a Jewish charity have been released on bail as they continue to investigate the suspected antisemitic hate crime.

Associated Press

The two British nationals, aged 45 and 47, were detained Wednesday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, London's Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement. The men were released under strict bail conditions and will be closely monitored, police said.

Authorities on Wednesday described the arrests as an important breakthrough in the case, but noted that three people were visible in the closed-circuit camera footage of the attack.

"We continue to work to try and identify all of those involved in this appalling attack and the investigation team is working around the clock to do this,'' said Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Police are investigating a claim of responsibility by a group with potential links to Iran but have not declared the matter to be a terror attack.

The blaze early on Monday morning in Golders Green, a London neighborhood with a large Jewish population, destroyed four ambulances belonging to the volunteer organization Hatzola Northwest, which provides emergency care to residents of the area. Oxygen cylinders in the vehicles exploded, breaking windows in an adjacent apartment block.

NBA Seattle: Does expansion news mean SuperSonics are back?

NBA Seattle: Does expansion news mean SuperSonics are back?

So,does this all mean the Seattle SuperSonics are coming back?

USA TODAY Sports

Not necessarily, but the chance did just get a lot better.

With the news Wednesday, March 25 that NBA owners hadapproved the formal exploration of expansion opportunitiesin Seattle and Las Vegas, the natural question is whether the SuperSonics, the team that eventually relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 to become the Thunder, would be making a reappearance.

In short: the chance is there for a prospective ownership group to take that step, though it's not a guarantee. According to language in the contract agreement from the franchise's move to Oklahoma City, which was obtained byNBC King5 in Seattle, the ownership group for the Thunder became prohibited from using the SuperSonics branding, color scheme, logo or any intellectual property.

Fans are ready for a Seattle SuperSonics return to Emerald City

According to the contract, should certain conditions be met under the approval of a new team located in Seattle, the Thunder ownership group will transfer intellectual property, including logos, color scheme, branding and even team history and statistics, to the new ownership group in place. In fact, there's even language in the agreement that banners, retired jerseys and trophies may be transferred to the new team owner in Seattle.

Any prospective ownership group, however, is under no obligation to reestablish the SuperSonics should an expansion franchise be approved in Seattle, and the NBA would leave it up to the prospective ownership group.

It makes logical — if not easy — business sense, though, for new owners to simply reincorporate the SuperSonics back into the NBA. For one, it takes years of trust, marketing outreach, capital investment and performance to build brand loyalty. Compared to a prospective expansion team in Las Vegas, the Sonics already have that.

To that point, it's not uncommon at NBA games in the Western Conference to occasionally have some fans in attendance with jerseys, flags and gear with the old SuperSonics branding.

And given this rich history — the SuperSonics played 40 seasons in the city and won an NBA Finals in 1979 — it's a near guarantee that basketball fans will once again embrace the brand in the city, which has been without an NBA outfit since 2008; the Seattle Storm, the city's WNBA franchise, held its inaugural season in 2000.

All this to say that it would be a missed opportunity, if not a massive blunder, for a new team to not embrace the Sonics brand.

Fans hold a flag for the Seattle Supersonics during the fourth quarter of a game between the Utah Jazz and LA Clippers at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on Oct. 10, 2023.

In a brief conversation with USA TODAY Sports following his press conference Wednesday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reiterated that any potential decision to reestablish the SuperSonics brand would be up to the prospective owner, though Silver also acknowledged the wide reach and loyalty fans have to the brand.

"I do a great deal of traveling around the country and the world," Silver said. "And one of the top five, six questions I get, easily, is 'When are the Sonics coming back?' "

Mbappé denies that Real Madrid examined the wrong knee after his injury

BOSTON (AP) —Kylian Mbappéon Wednesday denied media reports that claimed Real Madrid examined the wrong leg when the France star sustained a knee injury late last year.

The soccer show "After Foot" on French broadcaster RMC Sport reported this week that the Spanish club had initially scanned his right knee, rather than the left one, in December. Other media outlets in Spain ran similar stories, nearly all of them citing RMC.

Mbappé played throughout January but was then sidelined for three-and-a-half weeks before making his latest comeback.

"The report that said that they (examined) the wrong knee is false," Mbappé said at a press conference ahead of France'sWorld Cupwarmup against Brazil.

"I am maybe responsible indirectly for this situation, because when you don't communicate on what's happening, it opens doors to others' interpretations."

The club said in late December that Mbappé hadsprained his left knee.

Mbappé said he has "very clear communication" with Real Madrid.

France plays Brazil on Thursday in Foxborough and faces Colombia on Sunday in Landover.

On Monday in Paris,Mbappé said his knee feels fine. He was used as a substitute in Real Madrid's last two matches as he works his way back into form.

"There was a lot of frustration, a lot of anger, and then also some anxiety at one point," Mbappé told French media late Monday at a promotional event. "I had reached a stage where I didn't know what was wrong with me. I didn't go through that period in the best way. I wasn't the happiest player in the world. But I'm happy now because it's truly behind me. It's all gone."
