Start-of-year price increases seen lifting monthly US consumer inflation in January

Start-of-year price increases seen lifting monthly US consumer inflation in January

WASHINGTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - U.S. consumer prices likely maintained a steady pace of increase in January as businesses raised prices at the start of the year, which together with a stabilizing labor market could allow the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged for a while.

Reuters

The anticipated rise in the Consumer Price Index would ‌also reflect the continued pass-through from President Donald Trump's broad tariffs, economists said. The Labor Department's consumer inflation report on Friday would follow on the heels of news ‌this week of an acceleration in job growth in January and the unemployment rate falling to 4.3% from 4.4% in December.

"Firms tend to raise prices at the beginning of the year, after the holiday season," said Diego Anzoategui, an economist at Morgan Stanley. "Seasonal factors do not fully eliminate this pattern, so seasonally adjusted inflation prints tend to come in higher than during the rest of the year."

The CPI likely increased by 0.3% after a similar gain in December, a Reuters survey of economists predicted. Estimates ranged from a 0.1% gain to a 0.4% rise. With January's CPI report, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics will publish recalculated seasonal adjustment factors to reflect 2025 price movements. That could result in revisions to seasonally adjusted indexes for the past five years.

Economists said they did not expect the updated seasonal factors, the model used by the ‌BLS to strip out seasonal fluctuation from the data, to resolve the so-called January effect. CPI numbers have overshot expectations every January.

The report was slightly delayed by last week's three-day shutdown of the federal government. A longer shutdown last year prevented the collection of prices for October, causing volatility in the CPI data. Economists expected the volatility to fade in January's report.

In the 12 months through January, the CPI is forecast to have advanced 2.5%. The anticipated slowdown in the year-on-year inflation rate from 2.7% in December would mostly reflect last year's higher readings dropping out of the calculation.

The U.S. central bank tracks the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Indexes for its 2% inflation target. Both measures are running well above target. The Fed last month left its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range.

Food prices likely rose further in January after surging 0.7% in December, attributed by some economists to the failure to collect prices during last year's longest shutdown in history. Moves by ‌the Trump administration to roll back and cut tariffs on some imported food, including vegetables and bananas, were likely to ease food price pressures, economists said.

Some also noted that the White House's immigration crackdown had skirted undocumented agricultural workers, especially in Republican-led states like Texas and Florida, avoiding severe labor shortages that would have driven food prices much higher.

DATA CENTERS ARE DRIVING UP ELECTRICITY PRICES

"While many migrant workers have likely left over fears of deportation, and the flow of new workers has slowed sharply, immigration policies have not had as much impact on farm labor as many had feared," said Dean Baker, senior fellow at the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Though gasoline prices likely fell, the cost of electricity is expected to have increased because of strong demand from data centers ‌to powerartificial intelligence.

Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the CPI is expected to have increased 0.3% after rising 0.2% in December. Economists expected the one-off turn-of-the-year price hikes would be evident in prescription medication and motor vehicle insurance categories among others.

They also anticipated the tariff pass-through to persist for goods like recreation, apparel and household furnishings.

"With demand holding firm, we see no compelling reason for companies to stop passing tariff costs through to consumers with ‌only 40% of the cost increase clawed back," said Andy Schneider, a senior U.S. economist at BNP Paribas.

Services inflation components were expected to show mixed readings, with some economists predicting a moderation in the pace of price increases for hotel and motel rooms as well as airline fares after they soared in December.

Rent and healthcare costs are forecast to have maintained the same pace of solid gains in January.

In the 12 months through January, the so-called core CPI was forecast to have increased 2.5% after advancing 2.6% in December. That would ‌also reflect last year's higher readings dropping out of the calculation.

"Keeping in mind indications that additional tariff-related costs will pass through onto consumers this year, as well as the potential pass-through of the sustained weakening of the trade-weighted U.S. dollar over the past year, we continue to expect that inflation will re-accelerate for a time this year," economists at JPMorgan wrote in a note.

First ladyMelania Trumpwill also be making the trip to Fort Bragg, one of the largest military bases in the world by population, to spend time with military families.

Trump has been hitting the road more frequently to states that could play key roles in November's midterm congressional elections, including astop before Christmas in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The White House has been trying to promote Trump's economic policies, including attempts to bring down the cost of living at a time when many Americans are becomingincreasingly frustrated with Trump's efforts to improve affordability.

All-Star reliever Elroy Face, who saved 3 games for Pirates in 1960 World Series, dies at 97

All-Star reliever Elroy Face, who saved 3 games for Pirates in 1960 World Series, dies at 97

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Elroy Face, an All-Star reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates who saved three games in the 1960 World Series to help them upset the New York Yankees, has died. He was 97.

In a news release Thursday, the Pirates announced they confirmed Face's death. Team historian Jim Trdinich said the club was contacted by Face's son, Elroy Jr., and informed the former pitcher died earlier in the day at an independent senior living facility outside Pittsburgh in North Versailles, Pennsylvania.

No cause of death was provided. Face was eight days shy of his 98th birthday.

"It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Pirates Hall of Famer Elroy Face, a beloved member of the Pirates family," team chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement.

"Elroy was a pioneer of the modern relief pitcher — the 'Baron of the Bullpen' — and he played a critical role in our 1960 World Series championship."

Selected to six All-Star teams, Face went 104-95 with a 3.48 ERA in 16 major league seasons with Pittsburgh (1953-68), Detroit (1968) and Montreal (1969). He pitched in 848 games, starting only 27, and compiled 191 career saves — although saves didn't become an official statistic until 1969.

The 5-foot-8 right-hander holds the National League record for wins in relief with 96 and the major league mark for relief wins in one season after going 18-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 1959.

He topped the National League with 68 appearances and 61 games finished in 1960, when the underdog Pirates stunned Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and the mighty Yankees on Bill Mazeroski's famous home run that won Game 7 of the World Series at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

Face made four relief appearances in the Series, posting a 5.23 ERA in 10 1/3 innings. He closed out Pirates wins in Games 1, 4 and 5.

Inducted into the Pirates Hall of Fame in 2023, he is the club's career leader in appearances with 802. And the team noted that if saves had been an official stat before 1969, he also would hold that franchise record with 188.

Face was born in Stephentown, New York, on Feb. 20, 1928. He is survived by his three children, Michelle, Valerie and Elroy Jr., and his sister Jacqueline, the Pirates said.

"It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Pirates Hall of Famer Elroy Face, a beloved member of the Pirates family," Pirates chairman Bob Nutting said ina statement. "I was fortunate to get to know Elroy personally, and I will always be proud that we had the chance to honor him with his induction into the Pirates Hall of Fame."

Nicknamed "The Baron of the Bullpen," Face was a groundbreaking pitcher, performing in a role that evolved into the modern-day closer. Face holds the National League record for wins in relief (96). Face also holds Pirates franchise records for appearances (802) and saves (188). His NL record for saves was not broken until 1982, when Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter surpassed Face's total.

Face made All-Star Game appearances in three consecutive seasons from 1959-1961. The peak of his career coincided with the Pirates winning the1960 World Series, a Fall Classic made famous byBill Mazeroski's walk-off Series-winning home runinGame 7. Face recorded three saves in that World Series win over theNew York Yankees.

It was Face's 1959 season that was his finest. He went 18-1 with a 2.70 ERA over 57 appearances, finishing seventh in NL MVP voting. During his career, he was a three-time league leader in saves and twice led the league in games pitched.

Face spent 15 seasons with the Pirates before pitching briefly with theDetroit Tigersand Montreal Expos to close out his storied career.

Augusta National denies Gary Player's request to play fourball with his grandsons: 'I accept it with sadness'

February 12, 2026
AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 10: Gary Player of South Africa hits the opening tee shot on the 1st hole during the first round of the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 10, 2025 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by David Cannon/Getty Images)

Golf legend Gary Player has quite the history at Augusta National. Over his lengthy career, Player won the Masters three times — the first of which proved to be a historic win. He's spent plenty of time teeing off at Augusta, playing in the Masters a record 52 times.

But when Player wanted to get in one more round on the course, he was denied. Player, 90, said Augusta National denied his request to play fourball with his grandsons on the Masters' course. Player said he accepted the decision, butwas sad about it, per Golf Monthly.

"All the golf courses that have hosted the Open, the US Open and the PGA would oblige, but they won't do it at Augusta.

"It is just this current management there, but these are the times we live in and I accept it, but I accept it with sadness."

Player said he was hoping to tell his grandsons more about his playing days on the course. Player turned in a handful of excellent performances at Augusta National. He first won the Masters in 1961, becoming the first international player to win the event. Player was born in South Africa. He then won the Masters again in 1974 and 1978. In addition to those wins, he has 12 other top-10 finishes at the event. In 1998, Player became the oldest golfer to make the cut at the Masters. He was 62 at the time.

Player's success in golf wasn't just limited to the Masters. He won the PGA Championship twice, the U.S. Open once and The Open Championship three times. Those accomplishments made him — along with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus — "The Big Three" of golf. In 2011, Augusta invited Player to join Palmer and Nicklaus as honorary starters at the Masters. Player has continued to serve in that role and was an honorary starter at the 2025 Masters.

Augusta National, however, has strict rules on who can play at the course outside of the Masters. In order to play a round at Augusta, you need to be a member at the club. Player is not a member, and it's fairly rare for tour golfers to join Augusta.

Palmer was a member and Nicklaus is a member, however, so there's precedent for legendary players to get an invite to join the club. That's the only way to become a member at Augusta. You need to beinvited or recommended by a current member.

Unless that happens, Player seems unlikely to have his request granted. While it was assumed Player would serve as an honorary starter at the 2026 Masters in April, that could be up in the air depending on whether there's any animosity between Player and Augusta following the decision.

Did instructor miss JFK Jr.'s fatal flight? A 'Love Story' fact-check

Which parts of "Love Story" are fact and which parts are fairytale?

"Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette" kicked off its nine-episode look at the romance between the son of the 35th U.S. president and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and his intriguing, breath-of-fresh-air bride on Feb. 12 (Thursdays, 9 ET/PT on FX and streaming on Hulu). The dashing JFK Jr. is played by model-turned actorPaul Anthony Kellyand TV actressSarah Pidgeonembodies Bessette, who greatly valued her privacy.

Though inspired byElizabeth Beller's "Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,"series writers took liberties when adapting the 2024 book for the small screen – which might leave you wondering what's true. Here, we've investigated the most notable moments from the premiere to save you the search:

Did John F. Kennedy Jr. date Madonna? His illustrious dating history

A friend of John's makes reference to a romance withMadonnain the "Love Story" premiere. And in actuality, pre-Bessette, Kennedy Jr. dated some very famous faces, including Madonna,Sarah Jessica Parker, andDaryl Hannah. His romance with Hannah plays out on "Love Story," with Dree Hemingway portraying the "Splash" star.

Robert Littell, who roomed with Kennedy Jr. at Brown University, said in"JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography"that Kennedy Jr.'s romance with the "Material Girl" was brief.People reportsit happened in the late '80s.

"Madonna was totally a fling," Littell said. "Nothing more. Barely a fling at that."

Parker told The New York Timesin 1992 that she and Kennedy Jr. crossed paths at a theater, and he asked her out. While she enjoyed her time with him in the early '90s, she didn't enjoy the attention.

"We would go places where there wasn't a soul around, and the next day I'd see pictures of us there in the tabloids," Parker said.

John F. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah's relationship timeline

Hannah and Kennedy Jr. began seeing each other in the late '80s,according to reports.

Carole Radziwill, former "The Real Housewives of New York City" star, was famously married to Kennedy Jr.'s cousin Anthony Radziwill until his death from cancer in 1999, and remembers meeting Bessette in 1991 at a shared house in Southampton. "They stayed together for several more years and seemed happy," she added. "Although there were many times I saw John and he'd ask me about Carolyn because we stayed in touch a bit and I just knew he still had a longing for her."

How did John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette meet?

In "Love Story," John and Carolyn are introduced by Calvin Klein at a benefit for the rainforest in 1992. But the circumstances around their first meeting are a little cloudy. Friends and experts couldn't settle on a story in the 2019 documentary,"JFK Jr. and Carolyn's Wedding: The Lost Tapes."

Beller writes in "Once Upon a Time" that Kennedy Jr. and Bessette met in 1992 at a suit fitting at Calvin Klein, where she worked as a publicist. "Unsurprisingly, John came out of the meeting smitten," per Beller, "with a few men's suits and Carolyn's phone number. He called within days."

The "Love Story" Carolyn plays it much coyer. When John asks for her number at the fundraiser, she says, "I don't give my number out to strangers" and tells him, "You know where I work. Try reception." Then John surprises her by showing up at the Calvin Klein showroom for a new suit.

"Love Story" executive producer Brad Simpson acknowledges the "competing narratives" in an interview with USA TODAY. "But the most common narrative [of] how they met was at this fundraiser … so we decided that would be their first meeting." In "Love Story," Carolyn nearly leaves their first date because John is late, but the circumstances of the dinner could not be confirmed by USA TODAY.

Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr. attend the White House Correspondents' annual dinner in Washington, DC in 1999.

Were John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette headed for divorce?

In the "Love Story" premiere, which opens on the day of their deaths, July 16, 1999, John shares that he's staying at a hotel and not the Tribeca loft he shared with Carolyn. "It's not like she's begging me to come home," he tells his sister-in-law Lauren (Sydney Lemmon). When Carolyn arrives at the airport, she and John begin bickering about her tardiness and his family. John apologizes, blaming his intensity on anxiety.

"I love you," he says. "I appreciate you being here." Carolyn pulls him in for a kiss. "I love you, too," she says.

In his final days, Kennedy Jr. was staying at The Stanhope Hotel, according to "Once Upon a Time." Supposedly, he and Bessette "had a heated fight" on Tuesday, July 13, 1999, about her joining Kennedy Jr. at Rory Kennedy's wedding, which they'd leave for on Friday, July 16.

"She needed a break; she felt she'd done her share of Kennedy events for the time being," Beller writes. "Carolyn and John's fight turned into an enormous blowup, with John losing ever more patience, and Carolyn feeling ever more like an afterthought."

Wednesday, Kennedy Jr., Bessette and her sister Lauren had lunch at the Stanhope, in which Bessette agreed to go to the wedding, according to the book. Their meeting "signified a truce of sorts," Beller writes.

"Love Story" creator Connor Hines tells USA TODAY that his research taught him "these were two people who were very much in love, but were plagued with just impossible obstacles that would nearly break anybody, but that in the end, they always would've chosen each other."
