MOSCOW, Feb 12 (Reuters) - U.S. messenger app WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, accused authorities in Russia on Thursday of trying to fully block its service in ‌order to drive Russians to a state-owned app, which it alleged was used for surveillance.

"Trying ‌to isolate over 100 million users from private and secure communication is a backwards step and can only lead to less safety for ​people in Russia," WhatsApp said in a statement.

"We continue to do everything we can to keep users connected."

Some domain names associated with WhatsApp on Thursday disappeared from Russia's national register of domain names, meaning that devices inside Russia stopped receiving its IP addresses from the app and that it could be accessed only by using a ‌virtual private network(VPN).

Roskomnadzor, the state communications regulator, ⁠and the Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

RESTRICTIONS ON WHATSAPP

Roskomnadzor first began restricting WhatsApp and other messenger services in August, making it impossible to ⁠complete phone calls on them, accusing the foreign-owned platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases.

It said in December it was taking new measures to gradually restrict the app, which it accused of ​continuing to ​violate Russian law and of being a platform used "to ​organise and carry out terrorist acts on the ‌territory of the country, to recruit their perpetrators and to commit fraud and other crimes."

Since then, many Russians have been able to use WhatsApp only in conjunction with a virtual private network and have switched to using rival messenger apps, though some of those - like Telegram - are also under pressure from the authorities for the same reasons.

In a video published by state news agency TASS on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there was ‌a possibility of reaching an agreement if Meta entered into ​dialogue with the Russian authorities and complied with the law.

"If the ​corporation (Meta) sticks to an uncompromising position and, ​I would say, shows itself unready to align with Russian legislation, then there is no ‌chance," Peskov said.

Russian authorities, who also block or ​restrict social media platforms such ​as Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, are heavily pushing a state-backed messenger app called MAX, which critics say could be used to track users.

The authorities have dismissed those accusations as false and say ​MAX, which integrates various government-related services ‌into it, is designed to simplify and improve the everyday lives of citizens.

BERLIN (AP) — One-day strikes by unions representing pilots and cabin crew at Lufthansa caused a wave of flight cancelations Thursday at Germany's biggest airline.

Lufthansa criticized the walkouts as disproportionate but said it expects to offer a largely normal flight program Friday.

Lufthansa said the strikes called by the Vereinigung Cockpit and UFO unions led to extensive cancelations, but didn't give a specific figure. The departures board at the airline's main Frankfurt hub suggested most of its flights from there Thursday morning were canceled.

The airline said it was trying to rebook passengers onto flights by partner airlines and other companies from the Lufthansa group, which includes airlines such as Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.

The two unions called for the 24-hour walkouts on Tuesday.

Vereinigung Cockpit called for walkouts on flights departing from Germany in a dispute over the pension system for pilots at the airline and its Lufthansa Cargo unit.

UFO called for members to strike on flights departing Frankfurt and Munich and flights by the Lufthansa Cityline unit in a dispute over its demand for negotiations on various issues.

HONG KONG (AP) — China moved Thursday to curb a fierce price war among automakers that has caused massive losses for the industry, after passenger car sales dropped nearly 20% in January from the year before, the fastest pace in almost two years.

The State Administration for Market Regulation released guidelines for manufacturers, dealers and parts suppliers aimed at preventing a race-to-the-bottom price war.

They forbid automakers from setting prices below the cost of production to "squeeze out competitors or monopolize the market." Violators may face "significant legal risks," the regulator warned.

The rules also target deceptive pricing strategies and price fixing between parts suppliers and auto manufacturers.

Passenger car sales in China fell 19.5% in January from a year earlier, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. That was the biggest percentage drop since February 2024.

The 1.4 million passenger cars sold in January compared with 2.2 million units sold in December, CAAM said.

Weakening demand reflects a reluctance of cash-strapped buyers to splash out onbig purchases. Sales also have suffered from a cut in tax exemptions for EV purchases, coupled with uncertainties over whether trade-in subsidies for EV purchases will continue after some regionsphased them out, auto analysts said.

Theaggressive price warin China's auto sector has caused an estimated loss of 471 billion yuan ($68 billion) in output value across the whole industry in the past three years, Li Yanwei, a member of the China Automobile Dealers Association, wrote recently.

Analysts expect domestic demand to dip this year. S&P has forecast sales of light vehicles, including passenger cars, in China will fall up to 3% in 2026.

However, Chinese automakers are gaining ground in global markets. China's exports of passenger cars jumped 49% year-on-year to 589,000 in January.

"We don't foresee a loss in momentum for the Chinese auto industry this year," said Claire Yuan, director of corporate ratings for China autos at S&P Global Ratings.

Chinese automakers likeBYD— which overtook Tesla as the world's top electric vehicle maker — are targeting markets in Europe and Latin America as they confront intense competition in both prices and lineups at home due to oversupply.

Analysts at Citi expect China's car exports could jump 19% this year driven by exports of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Last month, Canadaagreed to cut its hefty 100% tariffon China-made EV imports in a move welcomed by Chinese carmakers. China also recentlyreached a dealwith the European Union that could allow more of its EVs to enter the European market.

BYD, China's largest carmaker, targets around 1.3 million of overseas car sales in 2026, up from the 1.05 million last year. Other major Chinese automakers have also set ambitious sales targets with a focus on exports.

Lindsey Vonn said she has undergone a third surgery since thedevastating crashthat ended her Winter Olympics dream in Milan last Sunday, writing on Instagram that her definition of success looks a little different now.

"I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful," the 41-year-old American Alpine skier wrote in apost, sharing photos of her in a hospital bed.

"Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I'm making progress and while it is slow, I know I'll be ok," she added, thanking the medical staff, friends, family and fans around the world who have voiced their support.

Vonn, a three-time Olympic medalist who was hoping to make a comeback this year, caught a gate with her right arm just 13 seconds into her run during the downhill final on Sunday, sending her tumbling down the slope.

She later said she had suffered a complex tibial fracture, which was stable butwould require multiple surgeries.

Vonn had competed just days after rupturing her ACL on January 30, in Crans-Montana on the World Cup circuit, an injury which had originally thrown her participation in the Games into doubt.

Still, she decided tocontinue competingin the Olympics,telling reporters: "My head is high. I'm standing tall and I'm gonna do my best." She had completed two training runs ahead of the final.

Speaking after the crash, Vonn said she hadno regrets about that decisionto compete, and that "my ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever."

In the photo shared on Instagram, Vonn's left leg can be seen in an external fixator – a frame attached to the outside of the leg that holds broken bone pieces together.

"Thankful for all of the incredible medical staff, friends, family, who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world," she wrote, before congratulating her teammates "who are out there inspiring me and giving me something to cheer for."

Vonn's recovery is expected to be a long one. Tibial fractures typically take months to heal and sometimes require additional surgeries. The ACL injury may also prolong recovery time, an experttold CNN earlier.

Vonn, who is theoldestAlpine skier to race at a Winter Olympics, qualified for her first Olympics in 2002, at just 17 years old. Throughout her three-decade career, she's overcome numerous physical challenges – including an extensive history of knee injuries and surgeries.

"I'm a little bit crazy, but I'm accepting of that,'' she said in October. "I'm willing to risk everything. That's why I've won as many times as I have in downhill. It takes a certain level of courage and willingness to throw yourself down the mountain.''

If you build it, they will come?

Some Iowa state senatorsintroduced a billthis week that would expand the state's major economic growth attraction program, creating financial incentives that could lure an NFL team seeking to build a stadium in the Hawkeye State.

Their target? TheChicago Bears.

"After years ofBearsfans seeking refuge across the Mississippi River from the incompetence, corruption and punitive tax and regulatory climate in the state of Illinois, it is time for the team to join their fans on the west side of the river," Republican Scott Webster, one of the legislation's sponsors said in a statement.

"Iowa can offer the Bears everything they need to build a world-class facility, tax certainty and the public infrastructure they need in a state led by common-sense conservatives."

The recruitment pitch didn't end there.

"While Illinois and Indiana squabble over this issue, we are ready to get off the sidelines and into the game," Kerry Gruenhagen, another senator sponsoring the bill, said in a statement. "Bringing an NFL team to Iowa would attract jobs, tourism and fans to our state and give us the opportunity to showcase what Iowa really has to offer. Iowans have dedicated themselves to our college sports teams, and we're ready to attract a professional team to our great state."

While Iowa was the stage for"Field of Dreams,"it isn't home to any major professional sports franchises.

One of theNFL's original franchises, born in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys, the Bears have been seeking a new stadium for years. Tenants of historic Soldier Field, the league's smallest venue in terms of capacity (61,500) in downtown Chicago since 1971, the Bears had planned to move to suburban Arlington Heights, where they own a 326-acre tract of land that used to be the site of Arlington International Racecourse.

But team president Kevin Warrenwrote in a letter to season ticket-holdersin December that an inability to get assistance from the state of Illinois in offsetting infrastructure costs around the proposed project had led the team to consider alternatives. The team has committed to paying for construction of a new stadium itself.

"We have not asked for state taxpayer dollars to build the stadium at Arlington Park. We asked only for a commitment to essential local infrastructure (roads, utilities, and site improvements) which is more than typical for projects of this size," Warren wrote. "Additionally, we sought reasonable property tax certainty to secure financing. We listened to state leadership and relied on their direction and guidance, yet our efforts have been met with no legislative partnership.

"We have been told directly by State leadership, our project will not be a priority in 2026."

Warren specifically cited Northwest Indiana as a potential locale to build a new stadium.

However, Illinois officials continue working to find a solution that would keep the Bears, a beloved team and one on the rise after winning the NFC North for the first time since 2018, in the Chicagoland area, where they've played since 1921.

"There's a lot of discussion, a lot of ongoing conversation with the Bears, and indeed, frankly, progress that's been made. So I'm pleased about that," Gov. JB Pritzker said Monday.

"But I'm going to let the Bears talk about what it is that they want to get done and how they want to get it done. And I'm obviously involved in negotiations and so are my entire team, as well as the members of the Legislature."
