After courting voters at extravagant parties and film festivals over the last months 2025, a slew of starry contenders were snubbed on Jan. 7 fornominations at the 2026 Actor Awards, including Joel Edgerton ("Train Dreams"), Tessa Thompson ("Hedda"), Julia Roberts ("After the Hunt"),Sydney Sweeney("Christy") and Andrew Scott ("Blue Moon").

The Actor Awards, renamed from theScreen Actors Guild Awards, are reliable predictors of how the Oscars will shake out, given that actors make up the largest branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But SAG also isn't afraid to take some big swings and have a little fun, with surprise nods for Pamela Anderson ("The Last Showgirl") and Jonathan Bailey ("Wicked") last year.

Here's who else will be sitting out this season's Actor Awards,which will stream live on Netflix March 1(8 p.m. ET/5 PT):

Jennifer Lawrence

The Oscar winner has dutifully hit every roundtable and red carpet touting"Die My Love,"a dark exploration of motherhood and toxic relationships. But the polarizing film may have been too off-putting for some SAG voters, who failed to recognize Lawrence's audacious, arresting work.

'Wicked: For Good'

The bubble has popped forthe movie musical sequel, which overperformed at last year's SAG Awards with nominations for best ensemble, best actress (Cynthia Erivo), best supporting actress (Ariana Grande) and best supporting actor (Jonathan Bailey). Grande earned the lone SAG nod this season for her complex and emotional turn as Glinda, the Good Witch of Oz.

Amanda Seyfried

Seyfried gives two of the most memorable performances of the winter in pulpy thriller "The Housemaid" and hypnotic movie musical "The Testament of Ann Lee," portraying the founder of the Shakers religious movement. Sadly, "Ann Lee" has had a rough time getting eyes on it, and Seyfried was egregiously missing from this season's SAG nominations.

'Jay Kelly'

Conventional wisdom would tell us that Hollywood loves nothing more than a movie about itself. But Noah Baumbach's showbiz traumedy, aboutan aging A-lister(George Clooney) forced to reckon with his paternal shortcomings, was blanked by SAG in best ensemble, best actor and best supporting actor (Adam Sandler).

Jeremy Allen White

At the start of the season,"The Bear" actorwas considered all but locked for his first Oscar nomination forbiopic "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere."But the brooding drama, about the creation of Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" album, was a box-office disappointment, and White has lost major awards momentum after snubs from SAG and Critics Choice.

'The Smashing Machine'

Thetrue-life MMA dramahas had mixed fortunes all season long: declared an Oscar frontrunner in its Venice Film Festival premiere in September, only to drop out of the conversation whenthe movie bombed at the box office. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt appeared to bounce back with Golden Globe nominations last month, but have taken another hit with the SAG snubs.

'Sentimental Value'

SAG has famously overlooked countless actors for foreign-language films, recently snubbing Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Fall") and Antonio Banderas ("Pain and Glory") for performances that went on to be Oscar-nominated. Still, it stings to seeRenate Reinsve,Inga Ibsdotter LilleaasandElle Fanningall left out of this year's nominations for their tremendous work in "Sentimental Value," as was expected supporting actor nominee Stellan Skarsgård for the gutting Norwegian drama.

Wagner Moura

TheBrazilian heartthrobhas been a critics' favorite this past year for "The Secret Agent," garnering scores of critics' prizes since winning best actor at Cannes Film Festival last spring. But much like the cast of "Sentimental Value," Moura was always going to be a long shot for recognition from the internationally adverse Screen Actors Guild, despite receiving nominations from the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.

If rumors are to be believed—and this time, it seems as though there's at least a little truth to the matter—Callum Turner will sign to His Majesty's secret service. Take this with a rather large grain of salt, but on January 5,theDaily Mailquoted a source close to Turner as saying, "He's been blabbing all over town. Callum is the new Bond, it's been confirmed. Everyone in his circle is talking about it. It's the worst-kept secret going."

No matter how suspect that quote may sound, it's a good occasion to wonder what the British actor's version of Bond would actually look like. And whether anyone has asked Dua Lipa if she can sing "Goldfinger." Here's how Turner would shake up—and definitely not stir—Denis Villeneuve's upcoming film.

Denis, Meet Callum

The road to the new Bond has not been smooth, thanks to Amazon's acquisition of the IP and a producer turnover. The best news so far is that 007 has a new director in Villeneuve. The French Canadian director, best known for hiscut-above sci-fi seriesDune, has a pleasingly procedural style. It is slick, humane, stylish. It's hard to think of anyone working today better suited to the post. He's used to directingyoung Monsieur Chalametin those adaptations of Frank Herbert's novels, but he has also worked with Ryan Gosling in aBlade Runnersequel and Amy Adams inArrival. It's hard to gauge exactly how that vision will fit with Turner's potential casting—the British actor has an old-world soulfulness to him—but it is a genuinely exciting thought.

Would Callum Turner Channel Seasoned Connery or Skew Closer to Craig?

The thing about being Bond is that you have in-built comparisons, even before you have started the role. Will Turner be a one-timer like George Lazenby? Or will he be smooth like Sean Connery? Turner has starred in at least three interesting projects: the afterlife rom-comEternity, the Jane Austen adaptationEmma,and the upcoming Cornish ghost-ship dramaThe Rose of Nevada. I have hopes that he will continue that vibe—it's a sort of sensitive gruffness—as Bond.

Will We Meet a Bond for the New Age? Or an Echo of Something Classic?

Bond is a yardstick. At any point in the franchise's history, his characterization tells us something about how we live. Craig provided a famously no-nonsense take on the role, which suited the start of a new century.Let's knock this thing down and build it all back, the producers seemed to say. His predecessor, Pierce Brosnan, was all '90s cool: heavy on the suave, even heavier on the gadgets.

What the hell does Bond mean in 2026? Theeternal conversation around masculinityreached an undeniable fever pitch last year in popular culture, and more recently we've seen a wider embrace of conservative values. There's a sense that a lot of big-name IP is staying resolutely apolitical. We'd wager that someone like Turner meets both moments: The 35-year-old very much looks the part in every sense, right down to those broad shoulders. But you also get the feeling that you could introduce him to your cool friends. Not for nothing, when I interviewed the London-born actor forGeorge Clooney'sThe Boys in the Boat, he was very nice indeed. (I don't actually have a say in Bond casting.)

Let's Get Dua Lipa in the Studio, No?

Turner's fiancée is Dua Lipa, a Grammy-winning pop star and ambassador for taking multiple holidays per year. I'm afraid we are not classy enough not to suggest a moment of brand synergy here. Let's get her in the studio! She's just finished a tour, so scheduling should be a breeze—and she certainly has the voice to give the theme song some convincing smoky glamour. We want something a little slinky like "Houdini," the lead single from her second album, or else an '80s callback like "Don't Start Now." There's a chance for some real humor here, and it could be a real hit. (Just look at herBarbiesmash "Dance The Night.") Amazon, Denis, Callum? Let's make it happen.

A powerful winter storm brought snow, wind and ice to much of Europe early this week, halting travel and canceling hundreds of flights at some of the world's busiest airports.

At least six deaths have been blamed on the storm, including five in France. The snow caused massive traffic jams in parts of the country, and trucks were required to leave the roads as conditions became more dangerous.

And while air travel was significantly impacted by the winter storm, kids in Paris took to the streets to play in the snow and enjoy a rare, unexpected day off.

Dutch Weather Woes

As snow fell across the Netherlands, Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport reported that some 600 flights were grounded during the day as crews worked to clear runways and de-ice planes waiting to depart. More snow was forecast for the rest of the week.

Dutch airline KLM warned travelers stranded at Schiphol that scammers posing as customer service staff were targeting passengers and incorrect phone numbers for the airline were circulating online. It warned people "to be alert to these phishing attempts. Do not respond to such messages, and do not share any personal or payment information."

KLM also said it was running short of the glycol fluid it uses combined with hot water to de-ice planes before they take off. It said airports across Europe were facing similar problems after days of freezing temperatures.

Just getting to and from the airport outside the Dutch capital was a struggle with frozen points and an early morning software glitch throwing the Netherlands' rail system into turmoil.

Limited rail services resumed later in the morning but routes around Amsterdam remained largely closed because of the icy conditions, national railway company NS said on its website. It urged commuters to "only travel if it's absolutely necessary."

Commuters forced to drive to work also faced time-consuming journeys as a combination of the snow and ice snarled traffic on some highways.

Thijs Rademakers, an 18-year-old student, decided to ride his bike rather than wait for public transport.

"It was tough, very slippery," he said in the eastern city of Arnhem. "Many people fall. Luckily, I didn't."

Rome's Wet Weather Limits Numbers At Pope's Epiphany Blessing

In Rome, weeks of rain that have swollen the Tiber River over its banks again muted Pope Leo XIV's Christmas-time celebrations. St. Peter's Square was only partially full Tuesday as a few thousand people crowded under colorful umbrellas to hear Leo deliver his Epiphany blessing from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.

Rome has been soaked by steady rains since before Christmas, and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri issued an ordinance for Tuesday limiting public access to parks and other areas at risk for falling trees and flooding.

Farther north, snow dusted Bologna and gave skiers in the Dolomites reason to cheer, though freezing temperatures are forecast for much of the north and central part of the peninsula over the coming days.

Temperatures Plummet In Britain

A cold snap sent the temperature in northern parts of Britain down to 9.5 degrees Fahrenheit overnight, as snow disrupted rail, road and air travel and closed hundreds of schools.

Horse races and soccer matches have been called off because of snow and frost, while a power failure caused by ice closed Glasgow's subway.

Northeast Scotland lawmaker Andrew Bowie said the situation was "critical," calling for soldiers to be sent in to clear snow and get food and medical supplies to stranded people.

Wintry Sweden

Even countries more accustomed to harsh winter weather reported problems as the snowy snap endured over large parts of Europe.

There was heavy snow in western Sweden, and authorities in Göteborg took all the city's trams out of service Wednesday morning because of the weather, broadcaster SVT reported. Snow banks churned up by passing trams posed a risk to other traffic.

In Finland, difficulties starting diesel buses that had been standing in the cold over the holidays and poor driving conditions led to bus cancellations and delays in the Helsinki area, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported.

Icy Balkans

Both heavy snow and heavy rain swept through Balkan countries, swelling rivers and creating problems in traffic and disruptions in power and water supplies. A woman died in Bosnia's capital Sarajevo on Monday after a snow-covered tree branch fell on her head. In neighboring Serbia, some western municipalities introduced emergency measures due to bad weather.

Authorities in Serbia warned drivers to be very careful as many set off toward skiing resorts or elsewhere for Orthodox Christmas on Wednesday and the upcoming weekend. Black ice stopped cars and forced drivers to park on the side on their way to Mount Bjelasnica above Sarajevo on Tuesday morning.

Heavy wind and stormy seas battered the Adriatic coastline in Croatia and Montenegro. Video footage showed the sea sweeping through holiday cottages at Ada Bojana in southern Montenegro during a storm.

The combination of rain, snow and slush blanketed the region, causing dozens of school districts to close for the day or begin on a delay. Snow accumulations were not expected to be high, but the road conditions made it unsafe to roll buses on Wednesday morning, districts said.

About a tenth of an inch of ice coated some areas — a little less than the amount that can cause power outages from falling tree limbs, but more than enough to create unsafe roads. Nonetheless, there were a few thousand power outages, mostly in Maine, with several hundred in Massachusetts.

"With icy conditions forecast during both the morning and afternoon bus routes, ensuring the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority," said the administration of Maine Regional School Unit 21, based in Kennebunk, in a statement.

All six New England states were under National Weather Service winter weather advisories, and the service issued several hazardous weather outlook statements for northern areas that could be hit with winter storms in the coming days. The possibility of heavy rain followed by dropping temperatures could create treacherous driving conditions later in the week, the service said.

Highway authorities in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts reported numerous accidents and vehicle spinouts in those states, though there were no serious injuries reported as of late Wednesday morning. At least five New England airports, including Logan International Airport in Boston, had aircraft being treated with deicing fluid for snow and ice.

In southern Maine, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory despite the potential for only two inches of snow in some areas, said Jerry Combs, meteorologist with the service in Gray, Maine. And more hazardous weather could be on the way, as another system is expected to bring rain Friday night into Saturday, followed by the potential for snow Saturday into Sunday, he said.

The service typically holds off on issuing an advisory unless there is the potential for four inches of snow, but other kinds of messy weather necessitated it on Wednesday, Combs said.

"That was for the freezing rain and sleet and snow mixture," he said. "That makes the road conditions that much worse."

"The Trump Administration has a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft, and diversion of life-saving assistance," the department said in a statement.

"The State Department has paused all ongoing U.S. assistance programs which benefit the Somali Federal Government," it said. "Any resumption of assistance will be dependent upon the Somali Federal Government, taking accountability for its unacceptable actions and taking appropriate remedial steps."

The suspension comes as the Trump administration has ratcheted upcriticism of Somali refugees and migrantsin the United States, including over well-publicizedfraud allegations involving child care centersin Minnesota. It has slapped significantrestrictions on Somalis wanting to come to the U.S.and made it difficult for those already in the United States to stay.

It was not immediately clear how much assistance would be affected by the suspension because the Trump administration has slashed foreign aid expenditures,dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Developmentand not released new country-by-country data.

The U.S. had provided $770 million in assistance for projects in Somalia during the last year of the Democratic President Joe Biden's administration, but only a fraction of that went directly to the government.

The Horn of Africa, where Somalia is located, is one the world's poorest nations and has beenbeset by chronic strifeand insecurity exacerbated by multiple natural disasters, including severe droughts, for decades.

In October, hesigned a three-year contract extensionwith Inter Miami to take him through the 2028 season.

"I don't see myself as a coach," the 38-year-old Messi told the Luzu TV streaming channel in an interview recorded in December that aired Tuesday. "I like management, but if have to decide for one of the three I would like to be an owner.

"I would like to have my own club, to be able to grow it, to start from the bottom and to be able to give the kids, the people, the opportunity to grow and make it an important club. If I had to choose, that's what would appeal to me most."

Messi, who led Argentina to the World Cup title in Qatar in 2022, is already apart ownerof Uruguay's fourth-division team Deportivo LSM, which is co-owned by Inter teammate Luis Suarez.

"Deportivo LS is a family dream that began in 2018. We have grown a lot with more than 3,000 members," club founder Suarez said last May in a video alongside Messi. "I want to offer Uruguayan soccer, the place I love and where I grew up as a child, opportunities and tools for teenagers and children to grow."

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi also has a future minority ownership stake in Inter included in his contract.

Messi won the MLS Golden Bootthis season after scoring 29 goals, five more than LAFC's Denis Bouanga and Nashville's Sam Surridge. He also had 19 assists, and his 48 total goal contributions was one shy of matching the league record set by Carlos Vela in 2019.

Messi also became the became the first player to winback-to-back MVP awardsin MLS history.

The per-game average on TV and digital platforms was a 10% increase from last season's 17.5 million and up 7% from 2023, according to the league and Nielsen. It also was just off the record average of 19 million, which was set in 1989.

Some of the increase can be attributed to a change in the way viewers are counted. Nielsen began using itsBig Data + Panelmethodology for all events last September with the start of the current television season.

Earlier this year, Nielsen began measuring out-of-home viewers for all states but Hawaii and Alaska, along with including data from smart TVs along with cable and satellite set-top boxes.

Nielsen previously measured only the top 44 media markets, which covered 65% of the country.

All five of the league's weekly packages experienced viewer increases.Prime Video's "Thursday Night Football" had the biggest gains at 16%. CBS also had a double-digit increase at 11%. ESPN/ABC's "Monday Night Football" and NBC's "Sunday Night Football" were both up 9% and Fox had a 6% jump.

Thursday night record

This was the most-watched NFL package on Thursday nights since the league started it in 2006.

The 15.33 million average surpassed the 13.65 million from 2019, when the games were on Fox, NFL Network and Prime Video.

Since Prime Video started to be the exclusive home of "Thursday Night Football" in 2022, the audience has increased 60%. The first season averaged 9.58 million as audiences had to adjust to a regular package of games moving to a streaming service.

Eight games this season averaged at least 15 million viewers, compared to four the first three seasons.

The Denver Broncos' win over theKansas City Chiefson Christmas night averaged 21.06 million, breaking the network's 19.39 million mark for most-watched from the Dec. 4 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions.

CBS has most-watched slate

CBS averaged 21.25 million, its best regular-season on record and the highest average among the networks.

The network's national late afternoon games averaged 25.83 million, the third straight year it has defeated Fox in that window.

The Thanksgiving Day game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys averaged 57.23 million, making it the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history. According to Nielsen, the game generated 11.7 billion viewing minutes on Nov. 27 and was the top broadcast telecast of the month. By comparison, "Stranger Things" onNetflixtotaled 11.8 billion viewing minutes across the entire month since it was available on demand.

CBS' most-viewed Sunday game was what seems to be the yearly meeting between Buffalo's Josh Allen and Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes. The Bills-Chiefs matchup on Nov. 2 averaged 30.84 million.

CBS ended up having four of the 10 most-viewed games.

Kings of primetime

NBC's "Sunday Night Football" averaged 23.5 million viewers, putting it on pace to be the top-ranked show in primetime for the 15th straight year when the television season ends in May.

However, NBC's two most-watched games were not on Sunday night. The NFL Kickoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4 averaged 28.3 million while 27.9 million tuned in on Thanksgiving night when Joe Burrow returned to the Cincinnati Bengals lineup after a toe injury to face the Baltimore Ravens.

Eight games averaged at least 25 million. The most-watched game on Sunday night was between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 12 (27.4 million).

NBC is also expected to have the most-watched show of the television season as it has the Super Bowl on Feb. 8.

Monday night momentum

"Monday Night Football" averaged 15.8 million viewers for the 21-game package, the second-highest average since it moved to ESPN in 2006. That included two games exclusively on ABC and 11 simulcasts.

Five games exceeded 20 million, the most since MNF moved to ESPN. The Detroit Lions-Baltimore Ravens matchup on Sept. 22 averaged 22.8 million, the fourth most-watched Monday night game in 20 seasons.

Including the two Week 18 Saturday games, ESPN's average for the season increases to 16.5 million. Last Saturday night's game between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers for the NFC's top seed in the playoffs drew 27.5 million, the most-watched Week 18 game across all networks.

Fox's season

Fox Sports averaged 19.63 million, its best regular season since 2015. America's Game of the Week in the late afternoon slot averaged 25.28 million, led by the Super Bowl 59 rematch between the Eagles and Chiefs on Sept. 14 (33.8 million). It was one of the rare instances where the network that had the previous Super Bowl also got the rematch.

Fox's most-viewed game was on Thanksgiving Day, with the Green Bay-Detroit matchup at 47.7 million. Fox also had four of the 10 most-viewed games.

Bump for streaming packages

The NFL also continues to be a huge driver for streaming packages.

In October data, Nielsen said Peacock saw a 16% viewing increase, Paramount Plus was up 8% from September and Prime Video had a 6.4% average of TV viewing on Thursdays.
