After more than half a century in operation, the nonprofit responsible for funding public media giants NPR and PBS willdissolve following millions in budget cuts spurred by the Trump administration.

The board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) voted to dissolve the organization on Jan. 5 after Congressvoted in July to claw back $1.1 billionthat had been allocated for its use.President Donald Trumphas rallied against the CPB, NPR and PBS since the start of his presidency, accusing the organizations of failing to present a "fair, accurate or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens." Trump hasrepeatedly targetedmedia organizations that he perceives as airing content that is unfavorable toward his administration.

CPB attributed its closure to the lack of funding and "sustained political attacks," saying it could no longer function as intended upon its 1967 founding, as previouslyreported by USA TODAY.

CPB was the primary funder of NPR, PBS and associated stations and properties. Both organizations have previously warned that they would struggle to continue operating without the support of federal monies.

What is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting?

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is a a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that was created by Congress via thePublic Broadcasting Act of 1967. Its purpose was to provide funding and support for public media across the United States to enable greater and equitable access to information and education.

CPB provides millions in grants to local public-access television and radio stations,according to its website.

It is best known for funding National Public Radio (NPR), including its network of hundreds of local news sources and radio shows in communities across the country, and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which airs educational television like "Sesame Street," concerts, cooking shows, documentaries, news and weather warnings. It was also once the home of other beloved shows, including "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" and Bob Ross' "The Joy of Painting."

What happened to CPB?

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting board ofdirectors voted on Monday, Jan. 5,to dissolve the institution after funding cuts.

CPB had already announced on Aug. 1, 2025, that it would shutter following over $1 billion in federal funding cuts to the organization,USA TODAY previously reported.

"For more than half a century, CPB existed to ensure that all Americans — regardless of geography, income, or background — had access to trusted news, educational programming, and local storytelling," said President and CEO Patricia Harrison in a press release. "When the Administration and Congress rescinded federal funding, our Board faced a profound responsibility: CPB's final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving, rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks."

The corporation has said it will keep some employees on for an"orderly closure," which will include distributing remaining funds and supporting the American Archive of Public Broadcasting in its efforts to preserve "historic content." It has partnered University of Maryland to preserve its own archives, which the corporation said would be made publicly available.

Will NPR, PBS shut down?

NPR and PBS as a whole will not "shut down," at least for now, but many associated properties, especially those in more rural or lower-income areas, may suffer. CPB was a significant portion of NPR and PBS's funding but not all of it, meaning the organizations will have to find another means of filling in the multi-million dollar gaps.

CPB said that70% of its federal fundingwent to locally owned public media stations, reaching roughly 99% of Americans. PBS advocatespreviously told USA TODAYthe budget cuts would disproportionately affect rural areas, potentially worsening existing news and information deserts. It is unclear at this time just how many programs may be impacted.

Some trademark programming at risk has sought other solutions, such as "Sesame Street's" recent deal with Netflix.

Just a day afterAshley Tisdalespoke out about her experience with a"toxic" celebrity mom group, Hilary Duff's husband,Matthew Koma, appeared to fire back with a savage response.

On Tuesday, January 6, Matthew shared a post that many online found "distasteful," with several accusing him of outrighttrollingtheHigh School Musicalalum, and even dubbing him a "mean girl."

While Ashley avoided naming names, internet sleuths quickly linked her allegations to several well-known celebrity moms, including Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore, and Meghan Trainor.

"And his response tells me everything I need to know so basically Ashley was right," one user wrote, while another added, "He shouldn't have said anything…"

Ashley Tisdale recently opened up about her experience of repeatedly being excluded from the "mom group's" hangouts and group chats, saying it made her feel like she was back in high school.

In a candidpersonal essay published inThe Cut, she noted that the group dynamic "stopped being healthy and positive" and that she eventually texted them, "This is too high school for me, and I don't want to take part in it anymore."

She recalled spending nights alone after putting her daughters to bed, questioning what she had done wrong to be excluded by people she considered friends.

The actress described feeling "totally lost" and emotionally exhausted as she noticed social media posts showing group gatherings she hadn't been invited to.

The 40-year-old mom of two stated that while some members of the mom group attempted damage control, others tried to convince her that she was the one choosing not to attend the group's gatherings.

She also revealed discovering group chats that didn't include everyone and said that after repeatedly seeing photos of the group spending time together without her, it became impossible to ignore the message being sent.

Shortly after the essay gained momentum online, Matthew Komashared an Instagram Storyfeaturing a photo of his face photoshopped onto Tisdale's body.

The image mimicked Ashley's original essay cover, with Koma sitting in the same pose on a couch and the headline altered to read, "A mom group tell-all through a father's eyes."

It continued, "When you're the most self-obsessed tone-deaf person on earth, other moms tend to shift focus to their actual toddlers."

"Read my new interview with @TheCut," the 38-year-old singer-songwriter captioned the image.

However, Koma's move appeared to backfire, as social media users pointed out that Ashley had not named any celebrities in her essay, nor had his wife, Hilary Duff, publicly addressed the "toxic" mom group allegations.

One person wrote, "Okay well Hilary Duff's husband kinda just confirmed that hiswife was in fact the mean girl."

Another commented, "Real man stay out of women drama. If Hilary wants this addressed then she or her reps can do that. Husband needs to b*tt out."

A third chimed in, "Emotional maturity of a 10 year old. Says a lot about the wife and makes Ashley's story more credible."

"I think that the man needs to leave the conversation. Besides, as someone who has experienced and still experiences bullying, I don't blame her for leaving a toxic situation."

While speculation has been rife that theAliens in the Atticstar's essay referenced Hilary, Mandy Moore, and possibly even Meghan Trainor, Ashley still follows the latter on Instagram and has unfollowed Hilary and Mandy.

A more far-fetched theory circulating online also linked thefallout to alleged political differences, claiming Ashley had shifted toward more conservative views that supposedly clashed with the others' more liberal stances.

However, a representative for Tisdale later set the record straight regarding her intentions, and her political views, in a statement toTMZ.

The spokesperson told theoutletthat the piece was not about Mandy, Hilary, or Meghan, adding that it was being "twisted into clickbait."

They also stated that there is "zero truth" to the political rumors, clarifying that Ashley is a registered Democrat, just like the other women in the speculated friend group.

However, Matthew's actions left some unconvinced by the representative's statement, with one person commenting, "Didn't he just rat his wife out then? 'Cause I think Ashley put out a statement saying she wasn't talking directly about Hilary."

While Koma's Instagram jab has reignited thecontroversial "bullying" debatesurrounding the mom group, Ashley has yet to respond to his mockery.

Meanwhile, Tisdale's husband, composer Christopher French, whom she married in 2014 and shares two daughters, Jupiter Iris French and Emerson Clover French, with, has not publicly commented on the situation, unlike Matthew.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia's centenarian former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was recovering in a hospital Wednesday from a broken right hip that his daughter said was serious but not life-threatening.

Mahathir was rushed to the National Heart Institute on Tuesday after he suffered a fall at his home. His office said he would remain hospitalized for the next few weeks for observation and treatment.

"It's a hip fracture and we have to wait for it to heal which, due to his age, will take time," his daughter Marina Mahathir told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "Otherwise he's as ok as anyone with a hip fracture can be."

She dismissed rumors that her father is dying.

"It's serious in anyone, more so a 100-year-old but it's not life-threatening," she said.

The centenarian fell while doing his normal morning exercise of brisk walking, according to Mahathir's son, Mukhriz, who added that doctors ruled out surgery due to his age and therefore his recovery may take longer.

Mahathir served as prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020, becoming theworld's oldest headof government during his second term. Despite stepping away from frontline politics, he continues to comment publicly on political developments.

The fall adds to a series of health scares in recent years for the former leader, who has has beenhospitalized several timesfor other conditions that were not critical.

Mahathir has a history of heart disease including two bypass surgeries, the first in 1989 after a heart attack and then a quadruple bypass in 2007. Heturned 100in July and said staying mentally and physically active kept him going.

"So long as I can function, I want to function. I want to behave almost as if I am not getting old. I try to live the same life that I lived when I was younger," he said at the time.
