Ja'Kobi Gillespie nets career-best 34 as No. 21 Tennessee corrals Texas

Ja'Kobi Gillespie poured in 22 of his career-high 34 points in the first half, and No. 21 Tennessee recorded its first Southeastern Conference win by taming Texas 85-71 on Tuesday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Gillespie was exceptional on both ends of the court, hitting 12 of 18 from the floor, 5 of 8 from long range and all five free throws. The senior added five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

J.P. Estrella added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Volunteers (11-4, 1-1). DeWayne Brown II and Jaylen Carey had 10 points and four rebounds apiece.

Tennessee shot 52.7% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. The Volunteers also held a 44-18 edge in paint points.

Tramon Mark had 20 points and five rebounds for the Longhorns (9-6, 0-2). Camden Heide totaled 16 points and four rebounds. Simeon Wilcher pitched in with 10 points.

Tennessee brought defensive intensity from the opening tip, getting three steals and a blocked shot to lead 11-5 at 15:39 on Gillespie's layup and free throw to complete a three-point play. However, Wilcher drained a 3-pointer at 14:10 for the visitors' first lead, 12-11.

After that back-and-forth stretch between the schools, the Volunteers found their game in the middle part of the half.

They took off on a 19-8 run over an 8:04 stretch for a 30-20 lead that ended with Brown making a layup off an assist from Nate Ament.

Then, Tennessee rode the hot hand of Gillespie to outscore Texas, 18-13, and hold a 48-33 advantage after Amari Evans' tip-in at the buzzer.

The point guard was the driving force, netting 22 points including a pair of deep shots in the final two minutes as the Volunteers made 17 of 27 shots (63%) and held the Longhorns, who were led by Mark's nine points, to 39.3% shooting (11 of 28).

In the second half, Felix Okpara's successful tip at 18:31 lifted the lead to 54-33, but Texas sliced it to 60-45 on Chendall Weaver's layup at 12:29. Heide and Mark hit treys to make it a game against at 61-51 with 10:34 left.

The Volunteers responded with the next seven points and maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the way to improve to 3-0 over two seasons of the Longhorns playing in the conference.

Tennessee took advantage of 16 Texas turnovers to score 27 points.

Who should Ravens hire to replace John Harbaugh? With Lamar Jackson, Ravens have a luxury their counterparts don't

Who should Ravens hire to replace John Harbaugh? With Lamar Jackson, Ravens have a luxury their counterparts don't

When theCleveland BrownsandLas Vegas Raidersinterview head coaches in the coming weeks, they know the most important question they must answer: How will we identify and develop a young quarterback?

When theNew York GiantsandTennessee Titansinterview head coaches, they, too, know the crux: First-round quarterbacksJaxson DartandCam Wardneed molding and development. The quarterback hopeful for each club is in the house. But how will he grow?

Shakeup at the top of theAtlanta FalconsandArizona Cardinalswill similarly require answers on a position with major question marks in 2026 and beyond.

These answers need not all come via offensive head coaches during a hiring cycle riper with defensive candidates than offensive. And in many successful franchises, including the reigning Super Bowl champions, the head coach's primary responsibility is not to call offensive plays.

But when teams front young quarterbacks or face questions at quarterback, the pressure to find the offensive panacea sharpens. Coaching searches often skew accordingly.

So theBaltimore Ravenshold a clear advantage.

Because asthey announced Tuesday night that 18-year head coach John Harbaugh was "relieved of his duties,"the Ravens are the lone team currently looking for a head coach that is not simultaneously searching to clarify their answer at quarterback.

Recruiting coaches while two-time MVPLamar Jacksonis under contract is a luxury.

Sure, plenty will argue that just as theRavens become the most attractive of seven NFL openingsand counting, Harbaugh immediately became the most attractive candidate when he hit the market. That doesn't mean the decision should be baffling. With a Super Bowl-winning coach and an MVP-winning quarterback, it should not be surprising if each believes he has the answers to future success. And if those answers don't align, a time comes for a change.

But as the Ravens look for a coach who will end their 13-year Super Bowl drought, they won't need as strong an emphasis on developing a quarterback.

[Get more Ravens news: Baltimore team feed]

That could allow them, should they want, to select the best overall candidate first. Their ceiling will immediately be high.

"We have so much talent on this team, and it's just disappointing that we're not able to be the team that's able to execute and win games when we need to win games," fullbackPatrick Ricardsaid this week. "As long as we have Lamar Jackson, I feel like this team can win a Super Bowl."

Among 7 openings, Ravens' Jackson offers best QB by far

A minority of coaches and executives across the league will argue that a coach in the Shanahan and McVay systems may prefer a more in-structure passer to build their offense around.

But more often, as the surprise of Harbaugh's dismissal hit Tuesday, league voices understood the new pecking order of openings.

"The jobs this cycle all lack QBs like normal so he's definitely the top QB and offense available for any coach," one NFC executive told Yahoo Sports.

An AFC assistant added of Jackson: "Any scheme fits him."

Jackson has shown that in eight seasons since the Ravens selected him with the 32nd pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He's earned four Pro Bowl berths, three All-Pro honors and two MVP awards while winning 76 of 107 regular-season starts.

In aggregate, Jackson has completed 64.8% of his passes for 22,608 yards and 187 passing touchdowns to 56 interceptions. His 102.2 career passer rating and 8.25 air yards per attempt currently hold the all-time career records, per Pro Football Reference.

And those numbers don't even include Jackson's additional 6,522 yards and 35 touchdowns rushing.

His health has been inconsistent at times, Jackson most recently missing four games and about half of another this season with hamstring and back injuries. But while healthy, he thrived. Consider his Week 18 return from a back injury in Pittsburgh with the AFC North title on the line. While the Ravens lost on a walk-off missed field-goal attempt Sunday night, Jackson completed 11 of 18 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

He activated another level in the fourth quarter, with 50- and 64-yard go-ahead touchdown passes to receiver Zay Flowers. The first came despite two defenders seeming to have Jackson wrapped up. Jackson was unfazed.

"Shoot — I cut a nose guard loose, and he somehow slipped out of it and threw the ball [50] yards for a touchdown," centerTyler Linderbaumsaid. "That's the kind of ability he has. So, he's fun to play for. [He's an] ultra competitor, and any time that ball is snapped to him, and it's in his hands, you know something electrifying can happen."

"The most electrifying player there is in this game."

After Harbaugh's final Ravens game, Jackson didn't endorse him

As reports of tension between Jackson and Harbaugh built this season, Jackson was asked last Thursday if he had a good relationship with Harbaugh.

"Yes, I believe so," he said. "I don't know where the noise came from. I don't know where the noise came from."

After the Ravens' 26-24 loss Sunday, Jackson was asked about Harbaugh again.

Did he want to see Harbaugh as his head coach next season?

"You're asking me about next year," Jackson said. "I'm so caught up in what just happened tonight. I can't focus on that right now, I just told you. Like he asked me, 'Are you stunned?'

"I'm stunned right now, and I'm still trying to process what's going on. I know we lost, but what the ... you know?"

Sure, the emotions of the season's sudden ending were fresh as Jackson's Herculean fourth quarter wasn't enough to advance to a sixth playoff berth in eight years. But Jackson was not the first player to receive a question about his coach's future at season's end. He would not have been the first to endorse a leader after a loss, especially one 18 years into his tenure in the organization with a Lombardi Trophy to his name and an AFC championship game berth in partnership with Jackson.

Jackson did not choose that.

By Tuesday night, Harbaugh was out. The Ravens thanked Harbaugh for a "tremendous" 18 years and the Super Bowl title.

Harbaugh issued his own statement, curiously including a smiley-face emoji as he said goodbye his "disappointment certainly, but more with GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION."

— Jori Epstein (@JoriEpstein)January 6, 2026

The Ravens' search, as team owner Steve Bisciotti said in a statement, begins. Their ability to move quickly on top defensive candidates including theLos Angeles Chargers' Jesse Minter,Los Angeles Rams' Chris Shula andHouston Texans' Matt Burke could prove to be an asset.

"That's a dream backfield to have Lamar andDerrick [Henry]and to play with those guys," Ricard said. "I feel like, as long as they're here, this team has a shot — no matter who else is playing."

KeShawn Murphy has buzzer-beater called off in heartbreaking fashion as Auburn falls to Texas A&M

January 06, 2026
AUBURN, ALABAMA - JANUARY 6: KeShawn Murphy #3 of Auburn Tigers reacts after officials ruled that his last-second shot did not beat the shot clock to win the game against the Texas A&M Aggies at Neville Arena on January 6, 2026 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Stew Milne/Getty Images)

KeShawn Murphy thought he had hit a ridiculous deep buzzer-beater to lift Auburn past Texas A&M on Tuesday night.

He was justbarelytoo late.

Murphy, with Auburn down by two points, caught an inbounds pass with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock, turned and fired. His shot was perfect, and sparked a massive celebration at Neville Arena. The shot looked like it was one of the first truly great buzzer-beaters of the college basketball season, several months before March even hit.

But unfortunately for Murphy and the Tigers, a review from the officials determined that the release was just a little too late. Murphy didn't get the shot off in time, and the points were called off. That gave the Aggies the 90-88 road win, and left them celebrating in front of a stunned arena instead.

— SEC Network (@SECNetwork)January 7, 2026

"I don't have a clear understanding still," Auburn coach Steven Pearl said, viaWSFA12's Rosie Langello-Hodgens. "I still gotta gather more information and get an understanding as to what their determination was ... Just from the angles that I saw, it looked like the ball was out of his hands on the red light, on the scoreboard that we were looking at. But I would imagine that they had a different angle they were looking at to determine the ball wasn't out of his hands."

Pearl had a conversation with the SEC after the game, and he was seen meeting with athletic director John Cohen and officials on the court well after speaking with reporters.

Texas A&M rallied from a 16-point hole to grab the win over the Tigers, which got them to 12-3 on the season and kept them a perfect 2-0 in SEC play. Pop Isaacs led the way with 21 points off the bench after he shot 7-of-12 from the field, and Jacari Lane added 17 points and seven rebounds. The Aggies have now won five straight entering Saturday's game with Oklahoma.

Keyshawn Hall led Auburn with 32 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, and Kevin Overton finished with 16 points. Murphy had eight points and eight rebounds. The Tigers have now lost four of their last six, and fell to 9-6 on the season — which is the first under Pearl, whotook over for his father, longtime coach Bruce Pearl, this past offseason. They'll head into Saturday's game with No. 15 Arkansas without an SEC win looking to avoid what would be the program's first three-game losing skid since 2023.

Saint-Tropez bids adieu to Brigitte Bardot with a funeral and public homage

PARIS (AP) — Brigitte Bardot's funeral will be held Wednesday with a private service in Saint-Tropez and a public homage at the French Riviera resort where shelived for more than half a centuryafter retiring from movie stardom at the height of her fame.

The animal rights activist and far-right supporter died Dec. 28 at age 91 at her home in southern France.

Once one of the world's most photographed women anda defining screen sirenof the 1960s, the ceremony will take place at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Catholic Church in the presence of guests invited by the family and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the protection of animals.

The service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., according to the foundation.

Local authorities said the ceremony will be broadcast live on large screens set up at the port and two plazas in the small town, allowing residents and admirers to follow the farewell.

After the church service, Bardot is to be buried "in the strictest privacy" at a cemetery overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, according to the Saint-Tropez town hall.

She had long called Saint-Tropez her refuge from the celebrity that once made her a household name.

A public homage will take place at a nearby site for admirers of the womanwhose imageonce symbolized France's postwar liberation and sensuality.

"Brigitte Bardot will forever be associated with Saint-Tropez, of which she was the most dazzling ambassador," the town hall said last week. "Through her presence, personality and aura, she marked the history of our town."

Bardot settled decades ago in her seaside villa, La Madrague, and retired from filmmaking in 1973 at age 39, during an international career that spanned more than two dozen films.

She later emerged as an animal rights activist, founding and sustaining a foundation devoted to the protection of animals.

While she withdrew from the film industry, she remained a highly visible and often controversial public figure through decades of militant animal rights activism and links with far-right politics.

She will be buried in the so-called marine cemetery, where her parents are also interred.

The cemetery, overlooking the Mediterranean sea, is also the final resting place of several cultural figures, including filmmaker Roger Vadim, Bardot's first husband, who directed her breakout film "And God Created Woman," a role that made her a worldwide star.

The actor, who worked alongside Thompson onSNLfor five seasons, also said he saw the comments others would make about the situation.

"Every single thing that everybody said, I saw it, and bottom line is, I'm not that type of person to scheme on a person. I'm not the type of person to even date somebody that like, one of my homies has dated. This is a very unique, nuanced thing that happened," Redd said.

During this time, he said, "We were all cool."

Redd reiterated that he would feel the people around him acting differently.

"I would have panic attacks, [and people] wouldn't be concerned about me or nothing, would just talk s--- ," he said. "And it was crazy how somebody would watch you destroy yourself."

He credited Evangeline as the only one to "call me on my s--- " and "help me with my s--- ."

"She helped me with my therapy journey and she told me things about her life that made me look at a lot of people involved differently. And in that time, we fell in love," he said.

Redd said the situation made him feel "bad from the start," like "an emotional double-edged sword."

"I really loved everything me and Kenan did. I really appreciated every piece of work that we put together. I think that we were a great team. And I hate doing something to somebody that I know would hurt them," he continued.

As he wiped away tears and his voice cracked, the actor said his decision "made me look terrible."

"To all the fans I disappointed, just know this was not something — I don't feel like a pimp. I don't feel cool about this at all, besides the fact that I found someone that makes me feel like I didn't even know what love was for real. And I just feel like I couldn't miss out on it. And love is not sensical," Redd said.

He claimed that he and Thompson discussed his relationship with Evangeline, and mutually agreed to keep it "under wraps." They worked together for a year before "everybody found out, and s--- changed," he recalled.

"Most people who know me from back home would know that I would be retaliating in a heartbeat, but not this time. This time it felt fair. Fair enough," he said, seemingly referring to his own karma.

"Anyway, this wasn't meant for laughs. Just meant for me to put some narrative on something that a lot of folks is already talking about but won't bring it up to me at all," Redd said, again apologizing to those he'd let down.

Protest-hit Iran warily watches the US after its raid on Venezuela

Protest-hit Iran warily watches the US after its raid on Venezuela

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) —Iran faces a new round of protestschallenging the country's theocracy, but it seems like the only thing people there want to talk about is half a world away: Venezuela.

Since the U.S. military seized Venezuelan PresidentNicolás Maduro, a longtime ally of Tehran, over the weekend, Iranian state media headlines and officials have condemned the operation. In the streets and even in some official conversations, however, there's a growing question over whether a similar mission could target the Islamic Republic's top officials including the supreme leader, 86-year-oldAyatollah Ali Khamenei.

The paranoia feeds into wider worries among Iranians. Many fear that close U.S. ally Israel will target Iran again as it did duringthe 12-day warit launched against Tehran in June. Israel killed a slew of top military officials and nuclear scientists, and the U.S.bombed Iranian nuclear enrichment sites. Khamenei is believed to have gone into hiding for his protection.

"God bless our leader, we should be careful too," said Saeed Seyyedi, a 57-year-old teacher in Tehran, worried the U.S. could act as it did in Venezuela.

"The U.S. has always been after plots against Iran, especially when issues like oil, Israel are part of the case. In addition, it can be complicated when it is mixed with the Russia-Ukraine war, the Lebanese (group) Hezbollah and drug accusations."

The U.S. long has accused the Iranian-backed Hezbollah of running drug-smuggling operations to fund its operations, including in Latin America, which the group denies.

'Please pray'

Immediately after Maduro's seizure, an analyst on Iranian state television claimed, without offering evidence, that the U.S. and Israel had plans during the war last year to kidnap Iranian officials with a team of dual-national Iranians. Even for conspiracy-minded Iranian television, airing such a claim is unusual.

Then on Sunday night, the prominent Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Javedan warned an audience at prayers in Tehran University that Khamenei's life was in danger.

"Someone said he had a bad dream that the leader's life is in danger," Javedan said, without elaborating. "Please pray."

However, Iran is roughly twice the size of Venezuela and has what analysts consider to be a much stronger military and robust security forces. The memory of Operation Eagle Claw, a failed U.S. special forces mission to rescue hostages held after the 1979 U.S. Embassy takeover in Tehran, also haunts Washington.

Then there's the political situation in Iran, with its theocracy protected by hard-liners within the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, who answer only to Khamenei. They could launch assassinations, cyberattacks and assaults on shipping in the Mideast, warned Farzin Nadimi, senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy who studies Iran's military.

And crucially, Iran also still has fissile nuclear material.

"In the grand-strategy scheme of things, they need to think about the day after," Nadimi said of anyone considering a Venezuela-style raid. "Iran is a much more complex political situation. They have to calculate the costs and benefits."

Not just the Iranians

Others wonder what part of the world theU.S. might take interest in next, while critics havewarned about setting a dangerous precedent.

"The regime in Iran should pay close attention to what is happening in Venezuela," Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid posted on social media on Saturday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not directly link Maduro's detention to Iran but acknowledged the protests sweeping Tehran and other cities, saying: "It is very possible that we are standing at the moment when the Iranian people are taking their fate into their own hands."

Hours before the U.S. action in Venezuela,U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iranthat if Tehran "violently kills peaceful protesters" the U.S. "will come to their rescue."

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei denounced the comments by Trump and Netanyahu as an "incitement to violence, terrorism and killing."

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican who had been close to Trump but resigned Monday after a falling-out with the president, directly linked the Venezuela operation to Iran.

"The next obvious observation is that by removing Maduro this is a clear move for control over Venezuelan oil supplies that will ensure stability for the next obvious regime change war in Iran," Greene wrote on social media.

'Make Iran Great Again'

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican, put on a "Make Iran Great Again" hat during a Sunday segment on Fox News. He later posted an image showing him and Trump smiling after the president autographed a similar-looking hat.

"I pray and hope that 2026 will be the year that we make Iran great again," Graham said.

Even Saudi Arabia, Iran's longtime rival that reacheda Chinese-mediated détente with Tehran in 2023, appeared to be thinking about a possible U.S. intervention in Tehran.

"By dragging Maduro before a U.S. court, Trump sent a message more brutal than the massive bombs his aircraft dropped on Iran's nuclear facilities," Ghassan Charbel, editor-in-chief of the Saudi-owned, London-published Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, wrote Sunday.

"How devastating it must be for Iran's supreme leader to hear of Maduro's abduction at the hands of American forces."
