On Jan. 6, the National Weather Service said a wintry mix will spread from the Great Lakes region up through New England, the latest round of ice and precipitation after recent days of similar conditions.

Ice and snow showers beginning Jan. 6 will continue through midweek from the upper Great Lakes through upstate New York and central New England,the weather service said. Millions of Americans were under winter weather advisories in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and New England states.

Next, a "larger, more disruptive" storm will bring heavy rain, thunderstorms and snow from the Plains to the East later in the week, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

Storm to bring wintry mix, icy conditions

Freezing rain with accumulations up to 0.1 to 0.2 inches on the ground could make for slick driving conditions from the upper Great Lakes through upstate New York and central New England, along with coastal Maine, the weather service said. The icy conditions will be accompanied by a chance of snow showers in the Northeast, with snow lingering through midweek.

The highest snowfall accumulations will be found in the mountains of interior New England, but lighter snowfall will linger in the region through Jan. 7, according to the weather service. Precipitation amounts could total between 1 and 6 inches, AccuWeather reported.

"Snow, sleet and freezing rain will affect travel from Minnesota to New England through midweek," AccuWeather said.

Second round of stormy weather to impact dozens of states

Later in the week, a powerful storm coming from the western part of the country will head eastward, spreading rain, thunderstorms and snow over dozens of states, AccuWeather reported. It will spread from Texas up through the Great Lakes on Jan. 8 and 9.

The second storm system will deliver wintry conditions to the Plains and Midwest, and a chance of severe thunderstorms in the Ozarks and Mississippi Valley, according to AccuWeather. States from Texas and Oklahoma through Tennessee and Kentucky could see severe thunderstorms that may bring hail and damaging winds later in the week, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.

"This coast-to-coast storm is expected to bring snow or a wintry mix from parts of Arizona and New Mexico through the Great Lakes and into northern New England," Roys said, adding that travelers should be prepared for slippery and hazardous road conditions.

Venezuelan officials announced the death count as the country's acting president,Delcy Rodriguez,pushed back onPresident Donald Trump, who earlier this week warned she'd face an outcome worse than Maduro'sif she does not "do what's right"and overhaul Venezuela into a country that aligns with U.S. interests. Trump has said his administrationwill now "run" Venezuela policyand is pressing the country's leaders to open its vast oil reserves to American energy companies.

"Personally, to those who threaten me," Rodriguez said in an address before government agricultural and industrial sector officials. "My destiny is not determined by them, but by God."

Venezuela's Attorney General Tarek William Saab said overall "dozens" of officers and civilians were killed in the weekend strike in Caracas and that prosecutors would investigate the deaths in what he described as a "war crime." He didn't specify if the estimate was specifically referring to Venezuelans.

In addition to the Venezuelan security officials, Cuba's government had previously confirmed that 32 Cuban military and police officers working in Venezuelawere killed in the raid. The Cuban government saysthe personnel killedbelonged to the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, the country's two main security agencies.

Seven U.S. service members were also injured in the raid, according to the Pentagon. Five have already returned to duty, while two are still recovering from their injuries. The injuries included gunshot wounds and shrapnel injuries, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to comment on the matter publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A video tribute to the slain Venezuelan security officials posted to the military's Instagram features faces of the fallen over black-and-white videos of soldiers, American aircraft flying over Caracas and armored vehicles destroyed by the blasts. Meanwhile, the streets of Caracas, deserted for days following Maduro's capture, briefly filled with masses of people waving Venezuelan flags and bouncing to patriotic music at a state-organized display of support for the government.

"Their spilled blood does not cry out for vengeance, but for justice and strength," the military wrote in an Instagram post. "It reaffirms our unwavering oath not to rest until we rescue our legitimate President, completely dismantle the terrorist groups operating from abroad, and ensure that events such as these never again sully our sovereign soil."

Trump grumbles about how Democrats reacted to the raid

Trump on Tuesday pushed back against Democratic criticism of this weekend's military operation, noting that his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden had also called for the arrest of theVenezuelan leaderon drug trafficking charges.

Trump in remarks before aHouse Republican retreatin Washington grumbled that Democrats were not giving him credit for a successful military operation, even though there was bipartisan agreement that Maduro was not the rightful president of Venezuela.

In 2020, Maduro was indicted in the United States, accused in a decades-long narco-terrorism and international cocaine trafficking conspiracy. White House officials have noted that Biden's administration in his final days in office last yearraised the awardfor information leading to Maduro's arrest after he assumed a third term in office despite evidence suggesting that he lost Venezuela's most recent election. The Trump administration doubled the award to $50 million in August.

"You know, at some point, they should say, 'You know, you did a great job. Thank you. Congratulations.' Wouldn't it be good?" Trump said. "I would say that if they did a good job, their philosophies are so different. But if they did a good job, I'd be happy for the country. They've been after this guy for years and years and years."

Trump's latest comments came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other top officialsbriefed leaders in Congresslate Monday on theVenezuela operationamid mounting concerns that the Republican administration is embarking on a new era of U.S.expansionismwithout consultation with lawmakers or a clear vision for running the South American country.

Democratic leaders said the session lacked clarity about the Trump administration's plans for Venezuela. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., an Iraq War veteran, said there is no dispute with Trump that Maduro was a "brutal dictator."

"But the problem we have is the fact that yet again we have now entered into a war where there is no known off-ramp," Duckworth said.

What US opinion polls show

Americans are split about the capture of Maduro — with many still forming opinions —according to a pollconducted by The Washington Post and SSRS using text messages over the weekend. About 4 in 10 approved of the U.S. military being sent to capture Maduro, while roughly the same share were opposed. About 2 in 10 were unsure.

Nearly half of Americans, 45%, were opposed to the U.S. taking control of Venezuela and choosing a new government for the country. About 9 in 10 Americans said the Venezuelan people should be the ones to decide the future leadership of their country.

Maduropleaded not guilty to federal drug trafficking chargesin a U.S. courtroom on Monday. U.S. forces captured Maduro and his wife early Saturday in a raid on a compound where they were surrounded by Cuban guards.

In the days since Maduro's ouster, Trump and top administration officials have raised anxiety around the globe that the operation could mark the beginning of a more expansionist U.S. foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere. The president in recent days has renewed his calls for an American takeover of the Danish territory ofGreenlandfor the sake of U.S. security interests and threatened military action on Colombia for facilitating the global sale of cocaine, while his top diplomat declared the communist government inCubais "in a lot of trouble."

Colombia responds to Trump

Colombia's Foreign Affairs Minister Rosa Villavicencio said Tuesday she'll meet with the U.S. Embassy's charge d'affaires in Bogota to present him with a formal complaint over the recent threats issued by the United States.

On Sunday, Trump said he wasn't ruling out an attack on Colombia and described its president, who's been an outspoken critic of the U.S. pressure campaign on Venezuela, as a "sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States."

Villavicencio said she's hoping to strengthen relations with the United States and improve cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

"It is necessary for the Trump administration to know in more detail about all that we are doing in the fight against drug trafficking," she said.

Meanwhile, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom on Tuesday joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen indefending Greenland's sovereignty.The island is a self-governing territory of the kingdom of Denmark and thus part of the NATO military alliance.

"Greenland belongs to its people," the statement said. "It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland."

The United Kingdom and France have agreed to deploy forces inUkraineif it strikes a peace deal with Russia, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, in a renewed push by Western leaders to guarantee Kyiv's post-war security and deter Moscow from further aggression.

After officials from 35 countries gathered in Paris for a meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a "declaration of intent" to put British and French boots on the ground in Ukraine in the event of a peace deal – a move Russia has long staunchly opposed.

"Following a ceasefire, the UK and France will establish military hubs across Ukraine and build protected facilities for weapons and military equipment to support Ukraine's defensive needs," Starmer said at a joint news conference alongside European leaders, as well as US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law.

Tuesday's meeting – the largest since the coalition was founded last spring – had risked being overshadowed by the US' toppling of Venezuela's authoritarian leader,Nicolas Maduro, as well as by Trump's coveting ofGreenland, the vast autonomous Arctic territory ruled by Denmark. Just days after the Venezuela raid, Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller underlined the administration's claims on the island,telling CNNthat Greenland should "obviously" be a part of the US and that "nobody is going to fight the United States" over its future.

Before the meeting, analysts had questioned whether the US could be trusted to guarantee Ukraine's security while it is threatening to occupy the territory of Denmark, a fellow NATO member.

But, despite Washington's sharp pivot toward the Western hemisphere, Witkoff stressed that the Trump administration remains determined "to do everything possible" to bring peace to Ukraine, and said "a lot of progress" had been made in Paris.

"We think we're largely finished with security protocols, which are important, so that the people of Ukraine know that when this ends, it ends forever," the envoy said, referring to Russia's nearly four-year war.

In an interview with CNN on the sidelines of the meeting, NATO chief Mark Rutte said Tuesday's meeting had been "very successful."

"I'm absolutely convinced that, if this gets into place, that Putin will never, ever try again to attack Ukraine," Rutte said.

There was no immediate reaction from Moscow, but the Kremlin has repeatedly stressed that it will not agree to foreign troops operating in Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force. President Vladimir Putin said in September that any Western troops in Ukraine would be considered"legitimate targets."

If a peace deal is struck, security guarantees will include a "continuous, reliable ceasefire monitoring system" led by the US and supported by other nations, the members of the Coalition of the Willing said in a joint statement.

The members also agreed to provide Ukraine with "critical long-term military assistance and armaments" to Ukraine, as well as deploying a multinational force to guarantee Ukraine's security "in the air, at sea and on land."

Although Britain and France had previously stated their willingness to deploy troops to Ukraine following a ceasefire, Starmer said that this agreement sets out the legal framework for allowing their forces to operate there.

"These security guarantees are the key to ensuring that a peace agreement can never mean a Ukrainian surrender or a new threat to Ukraine," Macron said. He noted Russia's history of breaking peace agreements with its neighbors, and said Ukraine's allies wanted to prevent such violations happening again.

The members also agreed to supply Ukraine with "all the necessary resources" to supply an armed force of 800,000 troops, Macron said. An earlier draft of apeace plan, which emerged in November and was criticized as being heavily favorable to Moscow, sought to cap Ukraine's armed forces at 600,000 personnel. Ukraine rejected that 28-point plan and has since worked on a revised draft during several meetings with US officials.

Although Tuesday's agreement represents the clearest picture yet of how Ukraine's allies intend to guarantee its security in the event of a peace deal, that deal itself remains elusive.

"We can only get to a peace deal if Putin is ready to make compromises," said Starmer. "For all Russia's words, Putin is not showing that he's ready for peace."

Despite intense diplomacy between the US and Ukraine in December, hopes for a swift peace deal were derailed after Putin told Trump that Ukraine had launched a massive drone attack on one of his residences. Trump said he was "very angry" after hearing the claim, which the CIA laterassessednot to be true.

Starmer said that Putin had "tried to distract from peace efforts with unfounded claims of attacks on his residence … This only hardens our resolve."

Betting Favorites

Winning on the road is hard but Vegas is bullish on three of the six road teams this weekend.

According to BetMGM Sportsbook, the Rams are favored by a whopping 10 points over the Panthers, who won the NFC South despite an 8-9 record that's the worst among the 14 playoff teams.

The Bills are also 1.5-point favorites over the home Jaguars while the Texans are favored by 3.5 points at the Steelers, who snuck into the playoffs on Mondaywith a 26-24 win in Week 18when Baltimore's Tyler Loop missed a game-winning 44-yard field goal as time expired.

First-time champ?

One bit of added intrigue to the postseason is that five of the 14 teams have never won a Super Bowl, including the Bills, Panthers, Jaguars, Texans and Chargers. The Texans and Jaguars have never even played in a Super Bowl.

The Bills have a particularly tough postseason history, losing four Super Bowls in a row from 1991 to 1994.

What's your reaction to Trae Young and the Hawks working toward a trade?

Tom Haberstroh:It's about time. The Hawks have clearly checked out with Young on the floor, allowing 126.2 points per 100 possessions with Ice Trae on the court this season. That's the highest rate for any starter in the league, and an embarrassing figure for an All-Star. With Jalen Johnson taking the wheel, Young's defensive liabilities became too much to handle.

Steve Jones:I'm not surprised. Good intentions don't always lead to great results and it was clear the Hawks had gotten a new wardrobe, took the long road home and stopped telling their franchise player about the future. It's time for both sides to move on and focus on the future. I'm sure Young will look to remind the world what he's capable of contributing moving forward.

Morten Stig Jensen:While I think Young does have significant upside, fact is, that upside has turned far more theoretical than practical. He just doesn't weave himself into the fabric of a team offense, and we obviously know of his defensive limitations. As such, the Hawks can surely find better use for his forthcoming $49 million salary slot, as they build around Johnson.

Ben Rohrbach:Not surprising. I'm sure the Hawks have canvassed the trade market for Trae Young for some time. If they haven't, they have been derelict of duty. They have long been better defensively without Young, and now they have an offense that can serve that defense without Young. Why not gauge interest from around the league, to see if they can improve that edition of this team? The question, then, is whether they can secure anything close to equal value for him.

Where would you like to see Trae Young land?

Rohrbach:The Minnesota Timberwolves? They are the only team that would have the array of defenders — Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert — to create a championship-caliber outfit around Young. Of course, they surely would have to give up one of those salaries in order to make the math work on a Young deal, and that could tip the scales against Young's fit on a title contender. These are inherent issues around trading Young's salary.

Jones:I believe he is spiritually a Washington Wizard or a Sacramento King.

Jensen:Chicago Bulls? With Young insisting upon being the primary player, likely negating championship upside in the process, we need to identify a team wherein that's not a problem. Hello, Chicago? The Bulls have the necessary expiring contracts to get it done, and Young's presence would allow Josh Giddey to play hismore natural position.

Haberstroh:On the waiver wire. That way, we can get him to fun places. His contract — $46 million this season and a $49 million player option next season — makes any trade so challenging. Minnesota would be an ideal fit with Gobert, but the Wolves really can't make the money work unless Gobert is included. I just don't love anywhere else.

Should the Hawks deal for Anthony Davis?

Jones:Absolutely not. If you did not feel like you could it done with Trae Young, what would make you believe you can do it with Anthony Davis? Build toward the future.

Haberstroh:I wouldn't. Move off of Young, but keep this thing going with the youngsters. I'd rather have Kristaps Porziņģis on a $30.7 million expiring deal and try to work out a sensible deal in free agency than go after Davis, who will be looking for a max extension in the offseason. Doubling down on AD at this point in his career reeks of desperation.

Rohrbach:To what end? I don't think Davis transforms a Trae Young-less Hawks roster into a championship contender, especially as an oft-injured big man aging into his mid-30s. His timeline does not mesh with the new version of Atlanta, which boasts Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher as young, exciting wings. There is already an oft-injured big on the roster. Why not spend Porziņģis' expiring salary more wisely in free agency in the summer?

Jensen:Trading for a soon-to-be 33-year-old who is often injured, has lost a step athletically and is owed $111 million after the conclusion of this season is just never a good idea, so that would be a hard no from me.

True or false: Trae Young can be the starting point guard on a championship team

Jensen:True, if he's able to adjust his game and conclude he's not the best player on the team. He'd have to be better off-ball, integrate himself as more of a helper, than the heliocentric player that he is. Defensively, I'm not sure there's anything he can do, so it would make sense for that team to have elite defenders around him, and at least a real superstar helming everything.

Haberstroh:True, only if Wemby is his center. It's looking more and more that the deep playoff run in 2021 was an aberration. He presents so many problems defensively that he requires an all-time center to put out all the fires behind him. Elite passer. So-so shooter. Calamitous defender.

Rohrbach:True, to a degree. I do not think a team that counts Young as the high-usage engine of its offense can win a championship. Now, if you were to build a team of talented two-way players (like the Timberwolves) around Young, and he were to accept his role as a secondary or tertiary option to a more well-rounded superstar, who is to say that version of the four-time All-Star point guard — an idealized one we've long anticipated — couldn't help a team to a title.

Jones:Yes, it's a possibility. He has scoring and playmaking, and he draws attention in pick-and-roll. On the right squad, with the right defenders and the right balance it could happen.

• He said managers made or ignored insensitive comments, such as a correspondent calling him a "whiny Jew."

• The show is known for its tabloid style, and Bernstein said it engaged in "deliberate news distortion."

A former producer for the syndicated CBS news program "Inside Edition" has suedParamount Global, claiming he was fired after complaining about repeated antisemitic comments by senior talent.

Joshua Bernstein said Lisa Guerrero, then a correspondent on the program, called him a "whiny Jew," "spoiled Jew," and an "old Jewish woman" and asked how he could have married a Muslim woman or worked for a "terrorist network" like Al Jazeera.

She also called him homophobic slurs and made "countless other racist and offensive comments" about interview subjects and coworkers, Bernstein claimed inthe lawsuit, which was filed earlier this month.

A publicist for Guerrero, who left "Inside Edition" over the summer, shared a statement from CBS Media Ventures that referred to Bernstein's claims as unsubstantiated.

Bernstein also claimed that Charles Lachman, the show's executive producer, was known as a "total homophobe" and showed bias against Black people and Muslims. According to Bernstein's lawsuit, after Bernstein showed footage of an interview with a female graduate student wearing a hijab, Lachman said, "Absolutely not! "On another occasion, plaintiff witnessed Mr. Lachman screaming at a female producer stating 'No! No! No! I don't want to see fat and ugly Kelly Clarkson! I want to see Kelly Clarkson in a short skirt!'" lawyers for Bernstein wrote in the complaint.

A representative forCBSMedia Ventures, theParamount Globalunit that syndicates "Inside Edition" and other shows like "Jeopardy!," denied Bernstein's claims.

"We are committed to a safe and respectful workplace for all," the representative wrote in an email. "After receiving the initial claim letter, outside counsel immediately conducted an investigation, which found no evidence to support these allegations. We will address the matter in court and are committed to vigorously defending against any fabricated claims."

"Inside Edition" is a tabloid-style syndicated news program that has been running since 1989, focusing on true crime and celebrity coverage, and is a top ratings-getter for CBS Media Ventures, with more than 3 million weekly viewers, according to Nielsen.

CBS Media Ventures is distinct fromCBS News, whereBari Weisswas recently named editor-in-chief.

Lachman has been its executive producer since the late 1990s, and longtime anchor Deborah Norville left the program last year, replaced by Eva Pilgrim. Bernstein's complaint said he worked there starting in 2019, that he had a medical episode in 2023, and that he was fired about a year later while on leave.

Bernstein's lawsuit also claims "Inside Edition" engaged in "deliberate news distortion," including by rigging devices to burn and explode so that segments about fireworks, e-bike batteries, and gas grills made those devices appear more dangerous than they were. He claimed that after he learned an e-bike battery had been rigged to explode, senior investigative producer Charlie McLravy told him to "keep [his] mouth shut and don't say anything to the lawyers."

Lachman and McLravy didn't reply to comment requests.
