McLaurin was running a route near the end of the first quarter of Washington's 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers when he suddenly fell near the sideline at Levi's Stadium. Replay showed that McLaurin's left knee gave out on him and buckled as he was planting to the outside.
He remained down on the field for quite some time in front of the Commanders' bench, clearly in a lot of pain.
A cart eventually came out for McLaurin, and he hopped up and onto the vehicle under his own power with his entire left leg in a full air cast. Players from both teams then saw him off.
The Commanders quickly ruled him out with a knee injury. Head coach Dan Quinn said after the contest that they didn't have any details, but they were concerned that the injury was significant.
McLaurin had one catch for 27 yards in the contest before he went down.
McLaurin entered Monday with 203 receiving yards and a single touchdown in four games this season, his eighth in the league with the Commanders. He missed the team's loss to the Indianapolis Colts in London due to a hamstring injury he suffered at practice before that contest before returning the following week.
While it's unclear how long McLaurin may be sidelined, the injury is a tough sign for a Commanders group that is struggling this season. The Commanders sit at just 1-4-1, which has them in last in the NFC East race. While they rallied a bit late and had a good look at the win down the stretch on Monday night, they couldn't quite pull it off.
The win pushed the 49ers to a perfect 6-0 on the year, which is the best record in the league. Only two other teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings, are also still undefeated.
The NFC East is still wide open, so the Commanders aren't completely out of the playoff hunt yet despite their rough start. But losing a target like McLaurin for a substantial amount of time is going to make things much more difficult for quarterback Jayden Daniels as they approach the midway point of the season.
